This article presents a computational design methodology that integrates generative (architectural) and analytical (engineering) procedures into a simultaneous design process. By combining shape grammars and graphic statics, the proposed methodology enable ...

Reuse of reinforced concrete (RC) components reduces construction’s environmental impacts and waste. Rather than crushing the concrete of an obsolete structure, its components are saw cut and later reassembled in a new structure. The theoretical feasibilit ...

Load-bearing systems of buildings are poorly valued when they reach functional obsolescence. Still, they contribute the most to the material weight and embodied impacts of buildings and infrastructures. The reuse of structural components therefore offers g ...

Most of existing buildings are made of concrete, new buildings are being built with it and others are demolished when still in good structural condition. This drives increased demands for raw materials, greenhouse gas emissions, and an accumulation of demo ...

The reuse of concrete pieces salvaged from structures undergoing transformation or demolition into new architectural projects has gained a sudden and visible interest over the past five years. However, the practice of reusing concrete pieces in new structu ...

Generating efficient structural forms, such as strut-tie models or reticulated steel structures, significantly relies on optimization methods that yield unique solutions, but with limited control over topology and force distribution. This paper presents a ...

Buildings are being demolished sooner and sooner after their construction. Regrettably this trend shows no signs of being reversed anytime soon. Demolition activities are driven today by real estate developments fueled by investment logics and rapidly chan ...

Concrete accounts for the largest share of worldwide building material use and waste generation, with cement production being responsible for approximately 9% of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. A currently untapped strategy to significantly reduce thes ...

Concrete is amongst the most wasted materials on earth, mainly due to building demolitions. Currently, after a building’s end of life, concrete is crushed to be used as replacement gravel in new concrete mixes or for backfilling. Aiming to increase the cir ...

This paper provides parametric estimates of embodied carbon reductions when structural components are reused in a typical office building. First, a lower bound of structural material quantities is estimated for a typical steel frame structure in a low-rise ...

The design and construction of doubly-curved structures often reveals to be challenging and can result in complex manufacturing and assembly. A recent strategy to tackle this difficulty consists in exploiting the connection between discrete differential ge ...

This paper shows a computational workflow to design a kit of parts consisting of linear bars and spherical joints that can be employed to assemble, take apart, and rebuild diverse reticular structures, e.g. gridshells and space frames. Being able to reuse ...

This paper presents the design and construction of a 36m2 gridshell, the rigidity of which is achieved through the bending of an initially flat grid of 210 reclaimed skis. The generated waste for its production is near zero as it is mostly built from disca ...

Existing concrete buildings should be retained for as long as possible to reduce the environmental burden of demolition and new construction. However, when urban pressure makes demolition unavoidable, salvaging and reusing concrete elements elsewhere in ne ...

This paper reviews the various graphic statics methods applied during the early structural design of the Collier Memorial, Cambridge, MA. Built in 2015 to honor fallen MIT Police Officer Sean Collier, the monument is a vaulted assembly of massive granite b ...

This paper presents an extension to the Combinatorial Equilibrium Modelling (CEM) design framework. So far, CEM gives the possibility to generate and explore multiple spatial equilibrium solutions in the early conceptual design phase. In addition to the fo ...

Crushing concrete liberated from demolished buildings to provide recycled aggregate is argued to be a sustainable way of reducing material extraction. Yet, in these high‐energy processes, large amounts of new cement is often used, negating this as a low‐ca ...

This paper presents a standardized assessment method to evaluate the reuse potential of building components, addressing the construction industry's need for sustainable resource management. The procedure relies on basic data about the assessed building, wi ...

This paper proposes the application of optimization techniques to design reticular structures made from a stock of reused elements. Still little explored, the reuse of structural components over multiple service lives has the potential to reduce the enviro ...

Predicting the availability and quantities of reusable components and recyclable materials is one of the challenges of a wider implementation of circular economy practices in construction. A detailed knowledge of the composition of past and current buildin ...
