Reuse reduces raw material use, waste generation and energy consumption caused by building construction. A substantial share of these impacts is contributed by load-bearing systems be-cause of their mass- and energy-intensive production process. Therefore, ...

Extracting pieces of concrete from obsolete buildings and reusing them, as is, in new assemblies is today rarely considered a strategy for improving the sustainability of the construction sector. By delaying the crushing of concrete into aggregates and avo ...

The design of envelopes with complex geometries often leads to construction challenges. To overcome these difficulties, resorting to discrete differential geometry proved successful by establishing close links between mesh properties and the existence of g ...

Carefully extracting reinforced concrete (RC) elements from soon-to-be demolished structures and reusing them as load-bearing components is an emerging circular low-carbon alternative to building new structures. As floor construction typically accounts for ...

Current construction practices follow linear economic models of "take-make-dispose" that result in substantial material landfilling after the end-of-life of buildings. This issue takes relevance given the construction industry's significant stake in the hi ...

This study examines the persistent, though often overlooked, practice of material reuse in francophone Switzerland, exploring advertisements from 1851 to 1968 that illustrate a continuous and practical approach to reclaiming construction materials. These a ...

A known challenge of modular structural systems is to avoid the oversizing of its elements while allowing a wide variety of spatial layouts. Considering any given floor outline and the availability of square slab elements with three discrete bending and sh ...

In this paper, we present a new method for upcycling concrete rubble waste into slender walls through the lightweight digital augmentation of mainstream construction machines. By using such method, the environmental impact of concrete construction and demo ...

Concrete rubble is among the most wasted materials worldwide. In this paper, we present a panorama of the upcycling potential of disused concrete rubble as construction material for new low-carbon structures. We identify 15 existing structural applications ...

The building industry is responsible for 35% of all solid waste in Europe and more than a third of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To address this, applying circular economy principles to the building sector is crucial, for example by reusing building elem ...

This case study applies life-cycle assessment methods to the preliminary design of an office building in order to quantify the benefits achieved when reusing its load-bearing components. Results show that the production of the load-bearing system would acc ...

A large part of building demolitions is motivated by purely socio-economic reasons. Hence, about-to-be-demolished structures, commonly made of reinforced concrete, very often present no or little degradation. When adaptive reuse of the entire building is n ...

This study delves into how the perception of levers and barriers for building element reuse evolves over time as individuals and practices gain experience on this topic. Three periods of business development are compared: the genesis of practice; the curre ...

Structural engineers play an increasing role in ensuring the transition towards a more sustainable construction sector: a) they are responsible for the design of the most resource- and energy-intensive part of buildings and infrastructure, and b) they regu ...

This work proposes a new direction in structural design: the synthesis of structures through the reuse of elements. Reusing structural elements reduces the environmental impacts of building structures because it avoids sourcing new material, it reduces was ...

Designing structures from reused elements is becoming an increasingly important design task for structural engineers as it has potential to significantly reduce adverse environmental impacts of building structures. To allow for a broad application of this ...

Exploring a wide range of relevant design options from the outset is crucial for every sound conceptual design process. Optimization techniques are generally employed to generate well-performing structural design options. However, focusing only on performa ...

A force-driven generative grammar rule is proposed as a design exploration method for planar networks in static equilibrium within non-convex domains. The aim is to enrich the catalog of unconventional structural typologies. Empty or partial networks in eq ...

This article develops a vector-based 3D graphic statics framework that uses synthetic and intuitive graphical means for the analysis and design of spatial structures such as networks of bar elements in static equilibrium. It is intended to support the coll ...

Structural robustness is related to the insensitivity of a structure to local failure, which is linked to the ability of force redistribution. Current approaches—probabilistic, risk-based, deterministic, and energetic—are poorly suited to inform the design ...
