A current goal driving alloy development is the identification of alloy compositions for high temperature applications but with the additional requirement of sufficient ductility at ambient temperatures. Multicomponent, single-phase, polycrystalline High E ...

High-entropy alloys are random alloys with five or more components, often near equi-composition, that often exhibit excellent mechanical properties. Guiding the design of new materials across the wide composition space requires an ability to compute necess ...

The face-centered cubic medium-entropy alloy NiCoCr has received considerable attention for its good mechanical properties, uncertain stacking fault energy, etc, some of which have been attributed to chemical short-range order (SRO). Here, we examine the y ...

The thermally activated pyramidal-to-basal (PB) transition of (c + a) dislocations, transforming glissile pyramidal dissociated core structures into sessile basal dissociated ones, lies at the origin of low ductility in pure magnesium (Mg). Solute-accelera ...

Prismatic slip in magnesium at temperatures T

AuNi is a classic long-studied fcc alloy combining a very "large"atom (Au) and a very "small"atom (Ni), and the large atomic size misfits suggest very high strengthening. Here, AuNi is used as a model alloy for the testing of new strengthening theories in ...

Pure Mg has low ductility due to a transition of < c+a > pyramidal dislocations to a sessile basal-oriented structure. Dilute alloying generally improves ductility. Enhancement of pyramidal cross-slip from the lower-energy pyramidal II plane to the higher- ...

The element Vanadium (V) appears unique among alloying elements for providing high strengthening in both the fcc Co-Cr-Fe-Mn-Ni-V and bcc Cr-Mo-Nb-Ta-V-W-Hf-Ti-Zr high-entropy alloy families. The origin of Vanadium's special role is its atomic volume: larg ...

IMPACT STATEMENT Experiments and theory are highlighting chemical ordering in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) as important for mechanical properties but the high strength in CoCrFeNiPd is predicted here to be achievable in the random alloy due to the large misf ...

Interatomic potentials are essential for studying fundamental mechanisms of deformation and failure in metals and alloys because the relevant defects (dislocations, cracks, etc.) are far above the scales accessible to first-principles studies. Existing pot ...

Mg-3wt.%RE alloys show substantially enhanced < c + a > activity as compared to pure Mg or other Mg-Al, Mg-Zn alloys of similar grain sizes. Activation of < c + a > slip has been postulated to be associated with the reduction of the basal Li stacking fault ...
