This paper presents the proof-of-concept for a 4D printed active compliant hinge with a selectively variable stiffness for the deployment and reorientation of satellite appendages. We use 4D printing to create an active compliant hinge capable of bending t ...

While reconfigurable robots provide a new promising approach for interactive systems, the complexity of distributed actuation/sensing systems, coupled kinematics and desired functionalities also bring new challenges and questions both in control design and ...

Origami shape transformation is dictated by predefined folding patterns and their folding sequence. The working principle of robotic origami is based on the same principle: we design quasi-two-dimensional tiles and connecting hinges and define and program ...

Dynamic modeling of folding joints is critical for predicting dynamic behavior, optimizing design parameters, and developing control strategies for origami robots and machines. Although kinematics of the folded joints exists, little research describes thei ...

Understanding the external environment depends heavily on vision, audition, and touch. Like vision and audition, the human sense of touch is complex. Tactile perception is composed of multiple fundamental and physical experiences felt as changes in stiffne ...

Recent studies demonstrate novel metamaterials featuring unique properties by combining origami-inspired designs with additive manufacturing. In particular, the use of flexural hinges endow distinct advantages toward miniaturization and fabrication; howeve ...

Origami robots self-reconfigure from a quasi two-dimensional manufactured state to three-dimensional mobile robots. By folding, they excel in transforming their initial spatial configuration to expand their functionalities. However, unlike paper-based orig ...

Thermally activated shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators are direct-driven and produce high power density with design versatility. However, beyond their linear actuation in spring forms there is little variety and their application in robotics is limited by ...
