The increasing availability of high‐frequency freshwater ecosystem metabolism data provides an opportunity to identify links between metabolic regimes, as gross primary production and ecosystem respiration patterns, and consumer energetics with the potenti ...

Gravel bars (GBs) are hotspots of biogeochemical activity, likely impacting carbon dynamics instreams and rivers. However, it remains unclear how GBs process dissolved organic matter (DOM) receivedfrom stream water and groundwater. Here we investigate the ...

River networks represent the largest biogeochemical nexus between the continents, ocean and atmosphere. Our current understanding of the role of rivers in the global carbon cycle remains limited, which makes it difficult to predict how global change may al ...

Glacier shrinkage opens new proglacial terrain with pronounced environmental gradients along longitudinal and lateral chronosequences. Despite the environmental harshness of the streams that drain glacier forelands, their benthic biofilms can harbor astoni ...

High-mountain streams are particularly vulnerable to climate change because they intimately interface with the cryosphere. As glaciers shrink and snowpack diminishes, proglacial streams will eventually shift from being glacier-fed to streams fed by groundw ...

Despite the recognition of streams and rivers as sources of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere, the role of CH4 oxidation (MOX) in these ecosystems remains poorly understood to date. Here, we measured the kinetics of MOX in stream sediments of 14 sites to res ...

Freshwater reservoirs are a known source of greenhouse gas (GHG) to the atmosphere, but their quantitative significance is still only loosely constrained. Although part of this uncertainty can be attributed to the difficulties in measuring highly variable ...

Rivers carry large quantities of carbon and form an important link between terrestrial, marine and atmospheric biogeochemical cycles, yet our observations of river carbon are severely limited. Here we provide a blueprint to build a global River Observation ...

Lakes and streams in mountain regions are important contributors to carbon (C) fluxes. However, detailed carbon balances of the stream‐lake continuum are rare. Combining eddy covariance (EC) measurements of lake‐atmosphere net ecosystem CO2 exchange with m ...

Dissolved oxygen (DO) sustains river ecosystems, but the effects of hydrological extremes remain poorly understood. While high river discharge (Q) enhances aeration, floods also deliver oxygen-consuming pollutants, making net impacts uncertain. Here, we an ...

Bacterial gut commensals experience a biologically and physically complex mucosal environment. While many chemical factors mediate the composition and structure of these microbial communities, less is known about the role of mechanics. Here, we demonstrate ...

Streams draining proglacial floodplains harbor benthic biofilms comprised of diverse microbial communities. These high-mountain ecosystems are rapidly changing with climate warming, and it is therefore critical to better understand the mechanisms underlyin ...

The impacts of glacier mass and area loss are assumed to affect stream hydrology and related ecosystems. We applied wavelet analysis to high frequency time series of discharge, conductivity, turbidity, air and water temperature in mountain streams influenc ...

Inland waters, including streams and rivers, are active components of the global carbon cycle.Despite the large areal extent of the world’s mountains, the role of mountain streams forglobal carbonfluxes remains elusive. Using recent insights from gas excha ...

Carbon dioxide (CO2) evasion from streams greatly contributes to global carbon fluxes. Despite this, the temporal dynamics of CO2 and its drivers remain poorly understood to date. This is particularly true for high-altitude streams. Using high-resolution t ...
