This paper presents a systematic literature review of the state-of-the-art of research on learning dashboards in the fields of Learning Analytics and Educational Data Mining. Research on learning dashboards aims to identify what data is meaningful to diffe ...

Learning analytics (LA) and lesson observations are two approaches frequently used to study teaching and learning processes. In both cases, in order to extract meaningful data interpretations, there is a need for contextualization. Previous works propose t ...

Blended inquiry learning, where students for example use online labs to perform experiments, is considered a promising approach to increase the skills and interest of students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics domains. For teachers to pr ...

Research on learning dashboards aims to identify what data is meaningful to different stakeholders in education, and how data can be presented to support sense-making processes. This paper summarizes the main outcomes of a systematic literature review on l ...

Finding relevant content is one of the core activities of users interacting with a content repository, be it knowledge workers using an organizational knowledge management system at a workplace or self-regulated learners collaborating in a learning environ ...

Orchestrating technology-enhanced learning is a difficult task, especially in demanding pedagogical approaches like inquiry-based learning (IBL). To foster effective teacher adoption, both the complexity of designing IBL activities and the uncertainty abou ...

The broad availability of mobile computing devices has prompted the apparition of social media applications that support teaching and learning. However, so far, there is conflicting evidence as to whether the benefits such applications provide in terms of ...

As a further step towards maturity, the field of learning analytics (LA) is working on the definition of frameworks that structure the legal and ethical issues that scholars and practitioners have to take into account when planning and applying LA solution ...

Social media applications have been proposed as a tool to complement students’ formal learning experiences, often to increase interactivity and participation. However, evidence regarding the benefits and challenges of such applications is still conflicting ...

Nowadays, students bring their full ecosystem of social media platforms and their own devices to school, while teachers benefit from and contribute to local or global repositories of educational resources. As a consequence, educational institutions have to ...

Learning is a complex, mostly invisible process that happens across spaces, occurring in the physical world but also increasingly in virtual worlds or web-based spaces. In order to explore what happens in such blended learning experience, there is a need ...

Designing and implementing online or digital learning material is a demanding task for teachers. This is even more the case when this material is used for more engaged forms of learning, such as inquiry learning. In this article, we give an informed accoun ...

The use of peer code review exercises is well established in software engineering education. Nevertheless, challenges involving students' ability to perform code reviews have been identified as barriers to successfully integrating code reviews in education ...

In across-spaces learning scenarios, evidence needs to be gathered from different spaces to obtain a more complete view of the teaching and learning processes. Multimodal learning analytics (MMLA) enables us to gather data from physical spaces, enriching t ...

Much of educational research today employs a complex mixture of qualitative and quantitative analyses, both during the exploratory and confirmatory phases. However, researchers are still stuck with tools that were developed mainly for single-perspective re ...

The concept of an ePortfolio was introduced in 1999 as an electronic learning record and further developed to overcome the limitation of learning management systems lacking persistent storage for learning artifacts. Nowadays, educational platforms have evo ...

The European Go-Lab project offers Inquiry Learning Spaces (ILSs) as open educational resources to support Inquiry-based Learning (IBL). To successfully exploit ILSs and implement IBL, proper support for orchestration is needed. Researchers have highlighte ...

The need to ensure privacy and data protection in educational contexts is driving a shift towards new ways of securing and managing learning records. Although there are platforms available to store educational activity traces outside of a central repositor ...

Despite the educational affordances that ubiquitous learning has shown, it is still hampered by several orchestration difficulties. One of these difficulties is that teachers lose awareness of what the students perform across the multiple technologies and ...

Despite the traction gained by the open data movement and the rise of big data and learning analytics in education, there is limited support for researchers in education to generate, access, and share experimental data using openly-available digital educat ...
