Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) have gained significant attention due to their high work density in order to fabricate compact and lightweight actuators. However, the major drawback of thermally activated SMAs is the time that takes for these materials to cool ...

This publication presents the characterization of self discharging Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) in order to give place to low duty cycle applications, during which a DEA must remain actuated for long periods of time. DEAs typically present a low c ...

Electroactive polymers show promising characteristic such as lightness, compactness, flexibility and large displacements making them a candidate for application in cardiac assist devices. This revives the need for quasi- square wave voltage supply switchin ...

Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) based actuators have been commonly used in applications that require being compact and lightweight. In this paper, the inherent stiffness of a flexure-based linear guide is used to create a bias-spring SMA actuator which further re ...

Smart Materials such as Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) play a major role in creating Smart Actuators that are compact and high performing. Traditional SMA bias-spring actuators are only capable of a single linear output. Using topology optimization, compliant S ...

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), also known as artificial muscles, are a sub-class of electroactive polymers (EAP). Due to their many qualities, such as high actuation strain, high bandwidth, high energy density, and a flexible body, they have shown ...

Facial paralysis is a challenging condition, and current treatments rely on invasive transplant surgeries using a two-stage free muscle transfer procedure. The use of artificial muscles is a novel, less invasive approach, allowing faster recovery and more ...

Impedance pumps are simple designs that allow the generation or amplification of flow. They are fluid-filled systems based on flexible tubing connected to tubing with different impedances. A periodic off-center compression of the flexible tubing causes the ...

Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) are a class of Smart Materials that are ideal for creating compact actuators. The complex nature of their behavior results in the use of these materials in simple geometries (wires, sheets) limiting their performances. A design me ...

In this paper, we investigate a novel passive approach to improve the actuation frequency of Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) with the Kirigami-inspired design using a thin layer of highly thermally conductive material. By depositing an 80 nm layer of gold on th ...

During the last three decades, the field of electro active polymers (EAP) has seen a rapidly growing interest worldwide. These materials can exhibit many advantages, such as elasticity, high energy density, high dynamics and are often nicknamed artificial ...

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) can be described as compliant capacitors formed by a dielectric elastomer film sandwiched between two electrodes. An applied voltage results in a compressive Maxwell stress, a thickness reduction and thus an expansion ...

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) are more and more used thanks to their stretchable and flexible properties. The fields of use are many, but the biomedical domain is particularly interesting in the case of artificial muscles. In DEAs, resistance is an ...

Although heart transplant is the preferred solution for patients suffering from heart failures, cardiac assist devices remain key substitute therapies. Among them, aortic augmentation using dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) might be an alternative tech ...

The present invention is related to a stretchable tubular device (1) comprising at least one layer (Lx) of a stretchable polymer, a power supply (2) and a set of electrodes (3a, 3b) connected to said power supply (2). The power supply can supply at least a ...
