Residual stresses can be advantageously used to permanently preload flexure micro-mechanisms in order to modify their deflection and stiffness. This paper presents a new preloading chevron mechanism (PCM) used to amplify the preloading effect of thin film ...

Flexure-based mechanisms have become state-of-the-art solutions for the design of high-precision mechanisms, free from friction wear, backlash, and lubrication. These properties which are necessary for applications in ultraclean or harsh environments, neve ...

Buckled beams have become key building blocks in compliant mechanisms to achieve nonlinear behaviors, such as bistability, constant-force and stiffness tuning. However, designing and modeling such components is challenging due to their highly nonlinear cha ...

Compliant mechanisms can advantageously be preloaded by buckled beams in order to reduce their motion stiffness, and therefore also their actuation forces. However, preloading compliant mechanisms has the side-effect of modifying the deformation of their f ...

Surgeons generally assess the mobility of the ossicle chain by manual palpation using rigid elongated hooks inserted through the ear canal. As the applied forces are in the range of a few grams equivalent force, the measurement remains subjective and its r ...

This paper presents a new planar flexure-based bistable two-jaw parallel gripper mechanism. The bistability of the mechanism is enabled by a pinned-pinned buckled beam suspended onto two cross-spring pivots. External energy is required only during the swit ...

In this paper, we present a new flexure-based load cell with adjustable stiffness designed for force sensors with extended force range and respective measuring resolution. This novel monolithic mechanism consists of a T-shaped flexure pivot combined with a ...

Flexure pivots, which are widely used for precision mechanisms, generally have the drawback of presenting parasitic shifts accompanying their rotation. The known solutions for canceling these undesirable parasitic translations usually induce a loss in radi ...

Flexure pivot based system (1) being one of: a force sensor, a force limiting device arranged to exert a predetermined threshold force, a torque limiting device arranged to exert a predetermined threshold torque, a programmable mechanical memory, or an acc ...

A micromachined mechanism (5) for a sensing tool (1), the mechanism comprising a support, a probe, pivotally mounted with respect to the support, a beam (10) connected to the support (8), and the probe, the probe (9) being intended to apply a load (Ftool) ...

The present invention concerns a pivot comprising two assemblies, namely a central assembly (401) and a peripheral assembly (400). These two assemblies are mobile in rotation relative to each other around an axis of rotation (A). The pivot is characterized ...

This article presents a novel family of exactly-rectilinear translation mechanisms, called the "QUADRISTAGE family", based on one-degree-of-freedom planar kinematics exclusively using pivot joints and rigid segments. Several variants are presented, some pr ...

Using shape memory alloys (SMAs) as actuators offers several advantages, including high power density, large stroke capabilities, and friction elimination. These attributes make SMAs suitable for actuating flexure-based mechanisms in a wide array of extrem ...

The tasks of electrical micro- and nanoprobing require precision that goes beyond human perception and therefore, depend on sensors providing real-time feedback. Efforts towards automation in micro- and nanoprobing and emerging areas such as branched nanow ...

This paper presents a novel planar four-bar linkage compliant mechanism (called 4-RCC) based on four flexure-based Remote Center of Compliance (RCC) pivots. With particular configurations and dimensions, the beam shortening of the RCC pivots can compensate ...

The invention relates to a system (13) for moving a lying patient (P) from a first position to a second position according to a controlled motion comprising a back sheet, a front sheet, each comprising two lateral edges (L1, L2). The system (13) comprises ...
