The exquisite structural and optical characteristics of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), combined with the tunable specificities of proteins and peptides, can be exploited to strongly benefit technologies with applications in fields ranging from bi ...

Living photovoltaics are microbial electrochemical devices that use whole cell–electrode interactions to convert solar energy to electricity. The bottleneck in these technologies is the limited electron transfer between the microbe and the electrode surfac ...

Living photovoltaics represent a growing class of microbial devices that are based on whole cell–electrode interactions. The limited charge transfer at the cell–electrode interface represents a significant bottleneck in realizing an efficient technology. T ...

Optical sensors based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) demonstrate tradeoffs that limit their use in in vivo and in vitro environments. Sensor characteristics are primarily governed by the non-covalent wrapping used to suspend the hydrophobic SWC ...

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) demonstrate a unique combination of optical, chemical, and physical properties that render them suitable for a variety of sensing applications. Their photostable near-infrared (nIR) fluorescence emissions are highly ...

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) emit photostable near-infrared fluorescence that is conducive for optical glucose monitoring. Such SWCNT-based optical sensors often require the immobilization of proteins that can confer glucose selectivity and reac ...

DNA-wrapped single-walled carbon nanotubes (DNA-SWCNTs) have demonstrated great versatility as optical sensors. SWCNTs emit a near-infrared fluorescence that is responsive to the slightest changes in their environment, enabling the creation of sensors that ...

The ability to electronically interface living cells with electron accepting scaffolds is crucial for the development of next-generation biophotovoltaic technologies. Although recent studies have focused on engineering synthetic interfaces that can maximiz ...

Cells can take up nanoscale materials, which has important implications for understanding cellular functions, biocompatibility as well as biomedical applications. Controlled uptake, transport and triggered release of nanoscale cargo is one of the great cha ...

A new team of researchers at EPFL is taking an 'anti-disciplinary' approach to creating optical devices. These devices take advantage of the synergy in tuning both nano- and bio-material properties, coupling 'the advantages of two growing, albeit tradition ...

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are wrapped with single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) to create near-infrared (NIR-II) fluorescent sensors for diverse analytes. However, the interaction between the negatively charged backbone of ssDNA and cations in biologi ...

Under aerobic conditions, excessive illumination results in the photogeneration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsible for protein damage and photo-inhibition during photosynthesis. We explore the effects of nanoceria (NC), a regenerative ROS scaveng ...

A molecular tool and a label-free method useful for detecting a target nucleic acid in a sample are disclosed, the molecular tool comprising a substrate comprising or consisting of an optical material; a first polymeric molecule, selected from nucleic acid ...

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) generate near-infrared fluorescence that is useful for biomedical and environmental optical sensing. They can be colloidally suspended by π-electron-rich biopolymers like DNA that self-assemble onto their surfaces. T ...

Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are among the few photostable optical emitters that are ideal for sensing, imaging, drug delivery, and monitoring of protein activity. These applications often require strategies for immobilizing prote ...

Recent advances in coupling light-harvesting microorganisms with electronic components have led to a new generation of biohybrid devices based on microbial photocatalysts. These devices are limited by the poorly conductive interface between phototrophs and ...

Surfactants offer a tunable approach for modulating the exposed surface area of a nanoparticle. They further present a scalable and cost-effective means for suspending single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), which have demonstrated practical use as fluore ...

Escherichia coli (E. coli) show limited extracellular electron transfer (EET) that compromises their use in bioelectronics. We enhance the EET in E. coli by expressing an electron transfer pathway that spans the inner and outer membranes of the cell, inclu ...

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have unique optoelectronic properties that make them suitable for applications ranging from phototherapy to imaging and sensing, but their uptake has mainly been explored in eukaryotic cells. Here the authors explore ...
