Patients with visual snow syndrome (VSS) experience uncountable flickering tiny dots in the entire visual field. Symptoms often persist over the years. Very little is known about altered perception in VSS. VSS is diagnosed based on subjective reports becau ...

Using batteries of visual tests, most studies have found that there are only weak correlations between performance levels of tests in healthy young adults. Factor analysis has confirmed these results. This means that a participant excelling in one test may ...

Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgical procedure worldwide and is typically associated with an improvement in visual acuity (VA). This study aimed to examine how various visual functions, beyond VA and contrast sensitivity, are affected b ...

Aims/Purpose: Eye diseases are implicitly assumed to affect vision generally. However, only visual acuity and contrast sensitivity are usually measured to determine perceptual deficits. What about orientation and motion perception? Methods: To address th ...

Introduction Recent work has shown an association between cognitive and visual impairments and two main theories were advanced, namely the sensory deprivation and the common cause theories. Most studies considered only basic visual functions such as visual ...

In the past 10 years, our laboratory has proved the shine-through paradigm to be a very sensitive endophenotype for schizophrenia. The shine-through paradigm is a visual backward masking task, where the target is a vertical vernier followed by a 25-element ...

Aims/Purpose: Cataract, i.e., an opacification of the natural intraocular lens, is one of the leading causes of visual impairments worldwide. Cataract surgery, which involves the removal of the opaque lens and implantation of an artificial intraocular lens ...

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe, validate, and compare the contrast sensitivity functions (CSFs) acquired with the novel quick CSF (qCSF) method from patients with early and intermediate age-related macular degeneration (eAMD and iAMD) a ...

Background and Hypothesis Individuals with schizophrenia have less priors than controls, meaning they rely less upon their prior experiences to interpret the current stimuli. These differences in priors are expected to show as higher alternation rates in b ...

Tests used in the empirical sciences are often (implicitly) assumed to be representative of a given research question in the sense that similar tests should lead to similar results. Here, we show that this assumption is not always valid. We illustrate our ...

In visual backward masking (VBM), a target is followed by a mask that decreases target discriminability. Schizophrenia patients (SZ) show strong and reproducible masking impairments, which are associated with reduced EEG amplitudes. Patients with bipolar d ...

Often, we intuitively assume that there are common factors in life. For example, we test people with a visual acuity test to determine whether they are allowed to drive a car or not- with the implicit assumption that the acuity test is representative of vi ...
