Complex cognition and relatively large brains are distributed across various taxa, and many primarily verbal hypotheses exist to explain such diversity. Yet, mathematical approaches formalizing verbal hypotheses would help deepen the understanding of brain ...

This paper investigates the problem of load-sharing optimization of gas compressors in the presence of uncertainty. The objective is to operate a set of compressor units in an energy-efficient way, while at the same time meeting a varying load demand. The ...

We consider the problem of trajectory generation for constrained differentially flat systems. Based on the topological properties of the set of admissible steady state values of a flat output we derive conditions which allow for an a priori verification of ...

Microaerobic (oxygen-limited) conditions are critical for inducing many important microbial processes in industrial or environmental applications. At very low oxygen concentrations, however, the process performance often suffers from technical limitations. ...

In the context of static real-time optimization (RTO) of uncertain plants, the standard modifier-adaptation scheme consists in adding first-order correction terms to the cost and constraint functions of a model based optimization problem. If the algorithm ...

Control of the longitudinal beam dynamics in heavy ion synchrotrons is a challenging task due primarily to the very fast time constants present in the system. Recently, the authors developed a model predictive controller for this system and demonstrated th ...

Optimal operating conditions for a process plant are typically obtained via model based optimization. However, due to modeling errors, the operating conditions found are often sub-optimal or, worse, they can violate critical process constraints. Hence, mod ...

Path-following tasks, which refer to dynamic motion planning along pre-specified geometric references, are frequently encountered in applications such as milling, robot-supported measurements, and trajectory planning for autonomous vehicles. Different conv ...

We present a design of a predictive control scheme for longitudinal beam dynamics in heavy ion synchrotrons. Specifically, we consider a linear-quadratic model predictive control (MPC) approach, whereby the quadratic program is solved via a fast gradient m ...

We consider the real-time optimization of static plants and propose a generalized version of the modifier-adaptation strategy that relies on second-order adaptation of the cost and constraint functions. We show that second-order adaptation allows checking ...

The present contribution demonstrates the applicability of polynomial chaos expansion to stochastic (optimal) AC power flow problems that arise in the operation of power grids. For rectangular power flow, polynomial chaos expansion together with Galerkin p ...

This paper investigates the optimal load-sharing problem of serial gas compressors in the presence of plant-model mismatch. The problem is formulated as a static real-time optimization task that is solved via modifier adaptation for interconnected systems. ...

We discuss the design of sampled-data economic nonlinear model predictive control schemes for continuous-time systems. We present novel sufficient convergence conditions that do not require any kind of terminal constraints nor terminal penalties. Instead, ...

We present a scheme for run-to-run disturbance rejection in optimization-based feedforward path following of a remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS). The proposed scheme is based on the inter-run estimation of unknown disturbances, such as wind forces an ...

This paper deals with the real-time optimization of uncertain plants and proposes an approach based on surrogate models to reach the plant optimum when the plant cost gradient is imperfectly known. It is shown that, for processes with only box constraints, ...

This paper investigates the relations between three different properties, which are of importance in optimal control problems: dissipativity of the underlying dynamics with respect to a specific supply rate, optimal operation at steady state, and the turnp ...

This paper presents an overview of the recent developments of modifier-adaptationschemes for real-time optimization of uncertain processes. These schemes have the ability to reach plant optimality upon convergence despite the presence of structural plant-m ...

We consider the tracking of geometric paths in output spaces of nonlinear systems subject to input and state constraints without pre-specified timing requirements. Such problems are commonly referred to as constrained output path-following problems. Specif ...

Recently, different real-time optimization (RTO) schemes that guarantee feasibility of all RTO iterates and monotonic convergence to the optimal plant operating point have been proposed. However, simulations reveal that these schemes converge very slowly t ...

We investigate the turnpike and dissipativity properties of continuous-time optimal control problems. These properties play a key role in the analysis and design of schemes for dynamic real-time optimization and economic model predictive control. We show i ...
