This thesis explores the applications of graphene for terahertz and far infrared optical components and antennas, with particular emphasis on tunable and non-reciprocal devices. Both terahertz technologies and graphene are emerging fields which hold many p ...

Graphene plasmonic nanostructures enable subwavelength confinement of electromagnetic energy from the mid-infrared down to the terahertz frequencies. By exploiting the spectrally varying light scattering phase at the vicinity of the resonant frequency of t ...

Tunable reflective elements based on graphene patches are proposed for reconfigurable-beam reflectarray antennas. The complex conductivity of graphene can be dynamically varied when an electric field is applied, allowing to control the phase of the reflect ...

An analytical circuit model able to predict the input impedance of reconfigurable graphene plasmonic dipoles is presented. A suitable definition of plasmonic characteristic impedance, employing natural currents, is used to for consistent modeling of the an ...

The potential of graphene for photonic applications was evidenced by recent demonstrations of modulators, polarization rotators and isolators. These promising yet preliminary results raise crucial questions: what is the optimal performance achievable by mo ...

Isolators, or optical diodes, are devices enabling unidirectional light propagation by using non-reciprocal optical materials, namely materials able to break Lorentz reciprocity. The realization of isolators at terahertz frequencies is a very important ope ...

Nonlocal electromagnetic effects of graphene arise from its naturally dispersive dielectric response. We present semianalytical solutions of nonlocal Maxwell's equations for graphene nanoribbon arrays with features around 100 nm, where we found prominent d ...

The abrupt metal-insulator transition in vanadium dioxide (VO2) offers novel performance and functionality for beyond CMOS switches, enabling simultaneous high ON current and ultra-steep subthreshold slope with low temperature dependence. We developed a fi ...

We studied the nonlinear optical properties of single layer graphene using high terahertz (THz) fields. With the use of a back gate and cooling down the sample to cryogenic temperatures we are able to spectrally probe the nonlinear THz properties of intrin ...

Recently the orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing scheme has been proposed to increase supposedly without limit the channel capacity between a transmitter and a receiver nodes communicating in line of sight. A controversy arose about the far-field e ...

Graphene quantum capacitors (GQC) are demonstrated to be enablers of radio-frequency (RF) functions through voltage-tuning of their capacitance. We show that GQC complements MEMS and MOSFETs in terms of performance for high frequency analog applications an ...

We propose and characterize graphene quantum capacitors, tunable with voltage by the control of their charge density, for tunable LC tanks as essential building blocks for Radio-Frequency (RF) functions in densely integrated circuits. We fabricate and inve ...

The concept and analysis of a THz frequency-reconfigurable antennas using graphene are presented. The antennas exploit dipole-like plasmonic resonances that can be frequency-tuned on large range via the electric field effect in a graphene stack. In additio ...

Theoretical upper limits on the radiation efficiency of reconfigurable antennas based on graphene are presented in closed form and discussed. The theory provides useful information for the design of these structures independently of the type and geometry o ...

We show that the public experiment held in Venice by Tamburini et al and reported in 2012 New J. Phys. 14 033001 can be regarded as a particular implementation of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communications and, therefore, has no advantages over e ...

We show that the reply by Tamburini et al (2012 New J. Phys. 14 118002) to our previous comment (2012 New J. Phys. 14 118001) on the experiment reported in Tamburini et al (2012 New J. Phys. 14 033001) does not actually invalidate any of the issues raised ...

In this paper, two THz reflectarray surfaces have been designed and fabricated in order to deflect a plane wave with any polarization and with a specific incident angle to three different specific directions each at distinct three frequencies of 0.7, 1.0 a ...
