Peripheral nerve repair remains a major clinical challenge, particularly in the pursuit of therapeutic approaches that ensure adequate recovery of patient's activity of daily living. Autografts are the gold standard in clinical practice for restoring lost ...

The modulation of the cervical vagus nerve (VN) using neural electrodes has shown great potential to treat cardiovascular, inflammatory, intestinal, or respiratory dysfunctions. Intraneural electrodes have shown great potentials for other neuroprosthetic a ...

The human sense of touch converts skin deformations into electrical impulses, enabling functional tasks such as object recognition and manipulation. Providing haptic information is crucial for improving usability in applications like prosthetics. Soft actu ...

An implantable device for intrafascicular stimulation and/or sensing of a peripheral nerve, including a blocking element adapted for wrapping a nerve, comprising an access point and an exit point, and an electrode adapted to traverse the blocking element v ...

Providing a naturalistic tactile sensory feedback is currently one of the key challenges in neuroprosthetics. Modeling has played a fundamental role in the development of "biomimetic" stimulation protocols, determining optimal activation patterns to be eli ...

Spinal cord injuries (SCI) often lead to upper limb impairment, necessitating innovative solutions for daily assistance beyond traditional rigid robotics due to their impractical weight and size. Despite still preliminary, soft wearables are arising as a p ...

Bioelectronic medicine (BM) is an emerging new approach for developing novel neuromodulation therapies for pathologies that have been previously treated with pharmacological approaches. In this review, we will focus on the neuromodulation of autonomic nerv ...

Direct stimulation of peripheral nerves with implantable electrodes successfully provided sensory feedback to amputees while using hand prostheses. Longevity of the electrodes is key to success, which we have improved for the polyimide-based transverse int ...

Wireless optoelectronic devices are fabricated by controlling the porosity of p-type silicon, enabling in vivo efficient, non-genetic optoelectronic modulation of peripheral nerve activity. ...

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has revolutionized the investigation of brain function. Similar approaches can be translated to probe spinal mechanisms. However, imaging the spinal cord remains challenging, notably due to its size and location ...

Background: Damage to the cerebellum can affect neural structures involved in locomotion, causing gait and balance disorders. However, the integrity of cerebellum does not seem to be critical in managing sudden and unexpected environmental changes such as ...

The control of upper limb neuroprostheses through the peripheral nervous system (PNS) can allow restoring motor functions in amputees. At present, the important aspect of the realtime implementation of neural decoding algorithms on embedded systems has bee ...

Minimizing the foreign body reaction to polyimide-based implanted devices plays a pivotal role in several biomedical applications. In this work, we propose materials exhibiting nonbiofouling properties and a Young's modulus reflecting that of soft human ti ...

Fall-related accidents are among the most serious concerns in elderly people, amputees and subjects with neurological disorders. The aim of this paper was to investigate the behaviour of healthy subjects wearing a novel light-weight pelvis exoskeleton cont ...

Gait impairments is a common condition in post-stroke subjects. We recently presented a wearable ankle exoskeleton called G-Exos, which showed that the device assisted in the ankle's dorsiflexion and inversion/reversion movements. The aim of the current pi ...

This case series study was designed to provide an overview of the efficacy of an active pelvis orthosis (APO) against the fall risk after multidirectional slippages in transfemoral amputees (TFA). To achieve this goal, we investigated the dynamic stability ...

Background: Several studies investigating the use of electromyographic (EMG) signals in robot-based stroke neurorehabilitation to enhance functional recovery. Here we explored whether a classical EMG-based patterns recognition approach could be employed to ...

Recent studies showed that the carotid sinus nerve (CSN) and the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) are overactivated in type 2 diabetes and that restoring the correct CSN neural activity can re-establish the proper metabolism. However, a robust characteriza ...

Implantable flexible neural interfaces (IfNIs) are capable of directly modulating signals of the central and peripheral nervous system by stimulating or recording the action potential. Despite outstanding results in acute experiments on animals and humans, ...
