Proton translocation through lipid membranes is a fundamental process in the field of biology. Several theoretical models have been developed and presented over the years to explain the phenomenon, yet the exact mechanism is still not well understood. Here ...

We established the charge and structure of the oil/water interface by combining zeta-potential measurements, sum frequency scattering (SFS) and molecular dynamics simulations. The SFS experiments show that the orientation of water molecules can be followed ...

In the past five years the Laboratory for fundamental BioPhotonics (LBP) has worked on developing new technology that can access the molecular structure and nanoscale properties of buried aqueous interfaces and aqueous solutions. Using these methods a bett ...

Using molecular dynamics simulations, we have studied the water-vapor and water-oil (decane) interfaces of aqueous solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The water-vapor interface is often used as a model for water-oil (hydrophobic) interfaces, yet we ...

Demands of higher spatial and temporal resolutions in linear and nonlinear imaging keep pushing the limits of optical microscopy. We showed recently that a multiphoton microscope with 200 kHz repetition rate and wide-field illumination has a 2–3 orders of ...

Interfacial molecular dynamics are key to understanding many phenomena in technology and life sciences. We demonstrate a first step toward accessing vibrational dynamics at liquid-liquid and nanoscopic (bio)-interfaces using time-resolved sum-frequency sca ...

Long-range ion induced water-water correlations were recently observed in femtosecond elastic second harmonic scattering experiments of electrolyte solutions. To further the qualitative understanding of these correlations, we derive an analytical expressio ...

Ions interact with water via short-ranged ion-dipole interactions. Recently, an additional unexpected long-ranged interaction was found: The total electric field of ions influences water-water correlations over tens of hydration shells, leading to the Jone ...

The water structure at the hydrophobic/waterinterface is key toward understanding hydrophobicity at themolecular level. Herein, we characterize the hydrogen-bondingnetwork of interfacial water next to sub-micron-sized hydrophobicoil droplets dispersed in w ...

Electrolytes interact with water in many ways: changing dipole orientation, inducing charge transfer, and distorting the hydrogen-bond network in the bulk and at interfaces. Numerous experiments and computations have detected short-range perturbations that ...

The use of a liquid microjet as a possible source of interest for Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) and Sum Frequency Generation (SFG) spectroscopy is examined. We measured non-resonant SHG scattering patterns from the air/water interface of a microjet of p ...

The interfacial region of aqueous systems also known as the electrical double layer can be characterized on the molecular level with second harmonic and sum-frequency generation (SHG/SFG). SHG and SFG are surface specific methods for isotropic liquids. Her ...

Morphological and gel-to-liquid phase transitions of lipid membranes are generally considered to primarily depend on the structural motifs in the hydrophobic core of the bilayer. Structural changes in the aqueous headgroup phase are typically not considere ...

Molecular level interactions that take place at the interface of different materials determine their local electrical, chemical, and mechanical properties. In the case of solid interfaces, this information has traditionally been obtained with experimental ...

A molecular understanding of the interactions between two-dimensional (2D) layered materials and liquids is crucial for nanofluidics, catalysis, and solution-based 2D material processing. Among 2D materials, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has a number of ou ...

Nanoscopic and microscopic water droplets and ice crystals embedded in liquid hydrophobic surroundings are key components of aerosols, rocks, oil fields and the human body. The chemical properties of such droplets critically depend on the interfacial struc ...

Lipid membranes provide diverse and essential functions in our cells relating to transport, energy harvesting and signaling. This variety of functions is controlled by the molecular architecture, such as the presence of hydrating water, specific chemical c ...
