The electrochemical behavior of a promising hydrogen/bromine redox flow battery is investigated for grid-scale energy-storage application with some of the best redox-flow-battery performance results to date, including a peak power of 1.4 W/cm(2) and a 91% ...

Electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) is an attractive option for storing renewable electricity and for the sustainable production of valuable chemicals and fuels. In this roadmap, we review recent progress in fundamental understanding, catalyst development ...

Dendrite formation limits the cycle life of lithium and sodium metal anodes and remainsa major challenge for their integration into next-generation batteries, even whenreplacing the liquid electrolyte by a solid electrolyte. Voids forming in solid metal an ...

A multiphysics model was developed for a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell at the device level to simulate water splitting operating under concentrated irradiation (between 50 to 600 kW m−2). The 2D model couples charge, heat, mass, photon, and momentum tran ...

This study presents a coupled techno-economic and environmental model of hybrid sensible-latent thermal energy storage (TES) systems, integrating phase change material (PCM) macro-capsules to enhance storage capacity and performance. The multi-scale model ...

The reaction of carbon dioxide with hydroxide to form carbonate in near-neutral or alkaline medium severely limits the energy and carbon efficiency of CO2 electroreduction. Here we show that by suppression of the otherwise predominant hydrogen evolution us ...

Solar driven water splitting can be achieved by coupling electrolyzers with PhotoVoltaics (PV). Integration of both functions in a compact PhotoElectroChemical (PEC) cell is an attractive option but presents significant scientific challenges. In this work, ...

Solar energy provides an unprecedented potential as a renewable and sustainable energy resource and will substantially reshape our future energy economy. It is not only useful in producing electricity but also (high-temperature) heat and fuel, both require ...

A gas diffusion electrode (GDE) based CO2 electrolyzer shows enhanced CO2 transport to the catalyst surface, significantly increasing current density compared to traditional planar immersed electrodes. A two-dimensional model for the cathode side of a micr ...

The present invention relates to process intensification, and renewable processing routes for polymer production, for example the solar production of Nylon 6,6 and precursors relevant for the Nylon 6,6 production (such as hydrogen, adiponitrile and hexaned ...

Gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) help to reduce transport limitations in devices for electrochemical CO2 reduction. Homogenized modeling of such devices requires input of morphological characteristics and effective transport properties of the porous structu ...

Radiative heat transfer is analyzed in participating media consisting of long cylindrical fibers with a diameter in the limit of geometrical optics. The absorption and scattering coefficients and the scattering phase function of the medium are determined b ...

An integrated cell for the solar-driven splitting of water consists of multiple functional components and couples various photoelectrochemical (PEC) processes at different length and time scales. The overall solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency of ...

Efficient, cost effective, and stable high-temperature heat storage material systems are important in applications such as high-temperature industrial processes (metal processing, cement and glass manufacturing, etc.), or electricity storage using advanced ...

The conception of practical solar-hydrogen generators requires the implementation of engineering design principles that allow photo-electrochemical material systems to operate efficiently, continuously and stably over their lifetime. At the heart of these ...

A combined experimental-numerical approach was used to study transient phenomena occurring in a photoelectrochemical cell using a membrane-separated porous TiO2-based photoanode and a dark Pt-based cathode. The effects of three parameters (pH in the anodic ...

Concurrent solar generation of hydrogen and CO through photoelectrochemical (PEC) water and CO2 electrolysis, and the subsequent use of the product gas mixture in conventional Fischer-Tropsch processes, has the potential to provide a flexible pathway for d ...

The durability, reliability, and robustness of photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices are key factors for advancing the practical large-scale implementation of cost-competitive solar fuel production. We review the known degradation mechanisms occurring in wate ...

This article reviews the progress, challenges and opportunities in numerical modelling of thermal transport, thermochemical reactions and thermomechanics in high-temperature solar thermochemical systems. Continuum-scale models are presented in mathematical ...
