A central theme of this thesis is using echoes to achieve useful, interesting, and sometimes surprising results. One should have no doubts about the echoes' constructive potential; it is, after all, demonstrated masterfully by Nature. Just think about the ...

Euclidean distance matrices (EDMs) are a major tool for localization from distances, with applications ranging from protein structure determination to global positioning and manifold learning. They are, however, static objects which serve to localize point ...

Depth imaging is commonly based on light. For example, LIDAR and Kinect use infrared light, while stereo cameras use visible light. These systems require hardware operating at high sampling frequencies, precise calibration, and they dissipate significant p ...

We propose a method for sensor array self-localization using a set of sources at unknown locations. The sources produce signals whose times of arrival are registered at the sensors. We look at the general case where neither the emission times of the source ...

We present pyroomacoustics, a software package aimed at the rapid development and testing of audio array processing algorithms. The content of the package can be divided into three main components: an intuitive Python object-oriented interface to quickly c ...

Euclidean distance matrices (EDMs) are matrices of the squared distances between points. The definition is deceivingly simple; thanks to their many useful properties, they have found applications in psychometrics, crystallography, machine learning, wireles ...

In this paper, we propose kinetic Euclidean distance matrices (KEDMs) a new algebraic tool for localization of moving points from spatio temporal distance measurements. KEDMs are inspired by the well-known Euclidean distance matrices (EDM) which model stat ...

We study the spatio-temporal sampling of physical fields representing the dispersion of a substance in the atmosphere. We consider the following setup: N sensors are deployed at ground level and measure the concentration of a particular substance, while M ...

In this paper we present FRIDA—an algorithm for estimating directions of arrival of multiple wideband sound sources. FRIDA combines multi-band information coherently and achieves state- of-the-art resolution at extremely low signal-to-noise ratios. It work ...

We consider the problem of reconstructing a diffusion field, such as temperature, from samples collected by a sensor network. Motivated by the fast decay of the eigenvalues of the diffusion equation, we approximate the field by a truncated series. We show ...

Acoustic source localization often relies on the free-space/far-field model. Recent work exploiting spatio-temporal sparsity promises to go beyond these scenarios, however, it requires the knowledge of the transfer functions from each possible source locat ...

We consider the estimation of the acoustic source position in a known room from recordings by a microphone array. We propose an algorithm that does not require the room to be convex, nor a line-of-sight path between the microphone array and the source to b ...

The present invention concerns a method for calibrating an array of receivers (ri), each receiver being configured for receiving a signal transmitted by at least one transmitter (si), and echoes of the transmitted signal as reflected by one or more reflect ...

Conventional approaches to sound source localization require at least two microphones. It is known, however, that people with unilateral hearing loss can also localize sounds. Monaural localization is possible thanks to the scattering by the head, though i ...

Recent works on reconstruction of room geometry from echoes assume that the geometry of the sensor array is known. In this paper, we show that such an assumption is not essential; echoes provide sufficient clues to reconstruct the room’s and the array’s ge ...

Knowing what amount of radioactive material was released from Fukushima in March 2011 and at what time instants is crucial to assess the risk, the pollution, and to understand the scope of the consequences. Moreover, it could be used in forward simulations ...

A compelling method to calibrate the positions of microphones in an array is with sources at unknown locations. Remarkably, it is possible to reconstruct the locations of both the sources and the receivers, if their number is larger than some prescribed mi ...

Recent methods for localization of microphones in a microphone array exploit sound sources at a priori unknown locations. This is convenient for ad-hoc arrays, as it requires little additional infrastructure. We propose a flexible localization algorithm by ...

An acoustic processing method for M acoustic receivers comprising the steps of: Determining a beamforming weight vector with M weights for the M acoustic receivers based on at least one the steering vector of at least one real acoustic source, on steering ...

We consider the problem of estimating room geometry from the acoustic room impulse response (RIR). Existing approaches addressing this problem exploit the knowledge of multiple RIRs. In contrast, we are interested in reconstructing the room geometry from a ...
