Service is a concept that separates the concerns of an organization into (1) the value created for users and (2) the way the organization manages its resources to provide this value. The discipline of management of information technology (IT) uses services ...

The basic idea behind the provision of a service is to hide the service implementation details from the client in such a way that more value is provided to the client. Very often support services allow too much of their implementation details to be visible ...

We present our experience of a three-week fieldwork in the form of a contextual inquiry with a service manager at the EPFL IT department. During these three weeks, we encounter a refusal of a user committee to sign a service-level agreement (SLA). We descr ...

Verification is a costly task, sometimes burdensome and tedious, requiring strong formal background. To reduce the effort and cost invested in verification, we developed a model-driven approach for automatic verification of service properties, done in the ...

Models are used in software engineering, enterprise architecture, requirements engineering, etc. In this context, models can give support in creating a shared understanding of what exists in an enterprise. For this purpose we suggest to use a cartography t ...

Large enterprises need to coordinate the IT initiatives that exist in different organisational units of the enterprise. If these initiatives are not coordinated, the resulting IT system is likely to become difficult to use and expensive to develop/maintain ...

We present a longitudinal project using action design research, which is a four-year collaboration between two EPFL entities: The research Laboratory for Systemic Modeling (LAMS) and EPFL’s IT department, called the VPSI. During that time the VPSI was goin ...

This paper presents how business and IT requirements are captured with the Systemic Enterprise Architecture Methodology (SEAM). The method is applied to the Car Crash Management System (CMS) - Software Product Line (SPL) case study. The existing business s ...

A service system is a popular concept in academia and industry. At the same time, it is a challenging concept to represent, due to its recursive nature and difficulty to relate it to entities in reality. In this paper we present an ontology for modeling se ...

The knowledge residing in the mental models of clients and stakeholders is considered as a crucial source of information by system dynamicists. Despite the importance of this knowledge, the theory of SD does not provide practical means for eliciting and re ...

We describe the use of the concept of service for aligning the business activities of an organization and its IT resources. This work is set in the context of a longitudinal action-research project between our research unit and our university's IT departme ...

Despite many years of research, alignment of business and IT services remains a challenge. In this paper we show how to verify the quantitative properties of a service against stakeholder requirements during service design. We model the service with the Sy ...
