Nucleus pulposus replacements have been subjected to highly controversial discussions over the last 40 years. Their use has not yet resulted in a positive outcome to treat herniated disc or degenerated disc disease. The main reason is that not a single imp ...

Acquiring high-contrast optical images deep inside biological tissues is still a challenging problem. Confocal microscopy is an important tool for biomedical imaging since it improves image quality by rejecting background signals. However, it suffers from ...

In this paper we discuss optical considerations and present design simulation results for a self-tracking (passive) solar concentrator. The self-tracking mechanism uses a reversible in-plane paraffin thermal actuator to couple short-wavelength light into a ...

In volumetric additive manufacturing, an entire three-dimensional object is simultaneously solidified by irradiating a liquid photopolymer volume from multiple angles with dynamic light patterns. Because this technique is based on 3D light dose accumulatio ...

Biofabrication technologies, including stereolithography and extrusion-based printing, are revolutionizing the creation of complex engineered tissues. The current paradigm in bioprinting relies on the additive layer-by-layer deposition and assembly of repe ...

Light propagation in multimode fibers is typically assumed to be extremely sensitive to changes in geometry. We study here a particular configuration where an S-shaped bend is translated between two sections of fiber. In this sliding bend configuration, we ...

The present invention is related to an endoscopic system for phase imaging, comprising a multicore waveguide (080), an optical system comprising at least one first light source (002), for illuminating the sample to be examined, a first camera (010) that is ...

A diffractive optical element (DOE) is presented to simultaneously manipulate the coherence plane tilt of a beam containing a plurality of discrete wavelengths. The DOE is inserted into the reference arm of an off-axis dual wavelength low coherence digital ...

A method for displaying an image viewable by an eye, the image being projected from a portable head worn display, comprises steps of: emitting a plurality of light beams of wavelengths that differ amongst the light beams; directing the plurality of light b ...

A volume hologram recorded with a lens array is proposed as a transflective screen for Head Worn Display (HWD) systems. Design, fabrication as well as proof of concept are reported. Light from a projection system, with similar properties to one mounted on ...

We study the optimization landscape of a smooth nonconvex programme arising from synchronization over the two-element group

\mathbf{Z}_{2}

, that is, recovering

z_{1}, \dots , z_{n} \in \{\pm 1\}

from (noisy) relative measurements $R_{ij} \approx z_{i} ...

Modern machine learning models use an ever-increasing number of parameters to train (175 x 10(9) parameters for GPT-3) with large datasets to achieve better performance. Optical computing has been rediscovered as a potential solution for large-scale data p ...

Volumetric additive manufacturing is a novel fabrication method allowing rapid, freeform, layer-less 3D printing. Analogous to computer tomography (CT), the method projects dynamic light patterns into a rotating vat of photosensitive resin. These light pat ...

One aspect of the present invention proposes a method of predicting meteorological information by using an artificial deep neural network. The present invention according to one example focuses on image processing, specifically on fusing a plurality of ima ...

Spatiotemporal nonlinear interactions in multimode fibers are of interest for beam shaping and frequency conversion by exploiting the nonlinear interaction of different pump modes from quasi-continuous wave to ultrashort pulses centered around visible to i ...

We propose single-step additive fabrication of graded-index optical elements by introducing the light exposure as the additional dimension to three-dimensional (3D) laser writing, hence (3+1)D writing. We use a commercial printer and photoresist to realize ...

The on-demand generation of viscous microdroplets to print functional or biological materials remains challenging using conventional inkjet-printing methods, mainly due to aggregation and clogging issues. In an effort to overcome these limitations, we impl ...

Lensless inline holography can produce high-resolution images over a large field of view (FoV). In a previous work [Appl. Opt.60, B38 (2021)], we showed that (i) the actual FoV can be extrapolated outside of the camera FoV and (ii) the effective resolution ...
