Objective To develop a fully automated method of retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) cells detection, segmentation and analysis based on in vivo cellular resolution images obtained with the transscleral optical phase imaging method (TOPI). Methods Fourteen ...

In vivo observation of the human retina at the cellular level is crucial to detect the first signs of retinal diseases and properly treat them. Despite the phenomenal advances in adaptive optics systems, clinical imaging of many retinal cells is still elus ...

Several 3D light-based printing technologies have been developed that rely on the photopolymerization of liquid resins. A recent method, so-called Tomographic Volumetric Additive Manufacturing, allows the fabrication of microscale objects within tens of se ...

Tomographic Volumetric Additive Manufacturing (TVAM) allows printing of mesoscopic objects within seconds or minutes. In TVAM, tomographic patterns are illuminated onto a rotating glass vial which contains a photosensitive resin. Current pattern optimizati ...

The presence of fungi in the coral microbiome is increasingly recognized, yet their potential impact on the holobiont’s health, particularly under stress conditions, remains underexplored. To address this gap, we isolated over 200 strains (predominantly As ...

The output of physical systems, such as the scrambled pattern formed by shining the spot of a laser pointer through fog, is often easily accessible by direct measurements. However, selection of the input of such a system to obtain a desired output is diffi ...

We present to the best of our knowledge the first successful demonstration of a planar, self-tracking solar concentrator system capable of a 2-dimensional angular acceptance of over 40 degrees. The light responsive mechanism allows for efficient waveguide ...

Attaching hydrogels to soft internal tissues is crucial for the development of various biomedical devices. Tough sticky hydrogel patches present high adhesion, yet with lack of injectability and the need for treatment of contacting surface. On the contrary ...

Objective: To image healthy retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells in vivo using Transscleral OPtical Imaging (TOPI) and to analyze statistics of RPE cell features as a function of age, axial length (AL), and eccentricity. Design: Single-center, explorator ...

Multimode optical fibers potentially allow the transmission of larger amounts of information than their single mode counterparts because of their high number of supported modes. However, propagation of a light pulse through a multimode fiber suffers from s ...

Intracranial aneurysms are increasingly being treated with endovascular therapy, namely coil embolization. Despite being minimally invasive, partial occlusion and recurrence are more frequent compared to open surgical clipping. Therefore, an alternative tr ...

Bubbles generated with lasers in liquids under confinement have been investigated for their potential use as the driving mechanism for liquid micro-jets in various microfluidic devices, such as needle-free jet injectors. Here, we report on the study of bub ...

Solar-hydrogen generation represents a promising alternative to fossil fuels for the large-scale implementation of a clean-fuel transportation infrastructure. A significant amount of research resources has been allocated to the development of photoelectroc ...

We recently described a method for confocal reflection imaging through fibers, as a way to increase contrast when imaging unstained biological specimens. Using a transmission matrix, focused spots can be created at the distal end of a fiber. The backscatte ...

Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) is a chemical commodity widely employed as a disinfection agent in water treatment applications. Its production commonly follows electrochemical routes in an undivided reactor. Powering the process with photovoltaic (PV) electri ...

The goal of 3D printing is to realize complex 3D structures by locally adding material in small volume elements called voxels - in contrast to successively subtracting material by etching, milling or machining. This field started with optics-based proposal ...

With the significant increase in photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation, more attention has been given to PV power forecasting. Indeed, accurate forecasting allows power grid operators to better schedule and dispatch their assets, such as energy storage ...

Photopolymerization is a common tool to harden materials initially in a liquid state. A surgeon can directly trigger the solidification of a dental implant or a bone or tissue filler simply by illumination. Traditionally, photopolymerization has been used ...

We report on a method to obtain confocal imaging through multimode fibers using optical correlation. First, we measure the fiber's transmission matrix in a calibration step. This allows us to create focused spots at one end of the fiber by shaping the wave ...

A volume hologram recorded with a lens array is proposed as a color transflective screen for Head Worn Display (HWD) systems. Design, fabrication as well as proof of concept are reported. Light from a single MEMS-based projector is efficiently diffracted t ...
