Reducing the environmental impact of industrial processes is highly linked with decreasing consumption of natural resources, energy, and water. In the context of climate change, as discussed during the Conference of Parties in Paris (COP21), the efficient ...

Pinch analysis and Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) have been extensively studied for optimization of industrial processes addressing heat recovery, utility selection and sizing. Analysis of renewable utility integration, such as solar thermal or ph ...

Industrial plant data are difficult to find in academic literature for a number of reasons such as confidentiality, and thus intentional masking, or problem size reduction. These common practices limit the ability of researchers to apply novel methods to r ...

Industrial operations consume energy and water in large quantities without accounting for potential economic and environmental burdens on future generations. Consumption of energy (mainly in the form of high pressure steam) and water (in the form of proces ...

A circular economy refers to an industrial economy with a cradle to cradle vision, shifting from the use of fossil fuels towards renewable energy, minimizing the use of toxic chemicals and reducing waste by recycling through careful system design. The conc ...

This paper proposes a general superstructure and a Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) model for the synthesis and simultaneous optimisation and Heat Integration (HI) of Single- and Multiple Effect Evaporation (SEE/MEE) systems including Mechanical ...

In this paper, we present our recent work on the implementation of an Energy Systems Integration platform allowing the modeling of Energy Systems integrating LCI (Life Cycle Inventory), LCIA (Life Cycle Impact Assessment) and GIS (Geographical Information ...

An optimization methodology based on Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) has been developed for simultaneous optimization of water and energy (SOWE) in industrial processes. The superstructure integrates non-water process thermal streams and optimizes ...

Greenhouse gas emission mitigation is one of the main motivations for increasing the use of biomass in providing environmentally friendly value-added products. The pulp and paper industry is a promising sector for the integration of biorefinery pathways. A ...

Waste heat accounts for up to 70% of input energy in industrial processes which enunciates the importance of energy recovery measures to improve efficiency and reduce excessive energy consumption. A portion of the energy can be recovered within the process ...

Despite commonly reported potentials for emission reduction and efficiency increase, industrial heat pumps have yet to reach wide-scale employment in non-refrigeration appli- cations. The bottlenecks are identified as a general scepticism from process oper ...

Surplus electricity production is anticipated to further increase during summer periods due to the inevitable high penetration of renewable energy sources in our energy system. Potential solutions for sustainable and efficient energy storage need to be exp ...

In recent work, a general superstructure and a Non-Linear Programming (NLP) model were presented for Multiple-Effect Evaporation Systems (MEESs). This NLP model was combined with a Heat Exchanger Network (HEN) model in order to simultaneously perform optim ...

Due to the global increase in energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and the depletion of fossil energy resources, the research presented here is focused on finding economically and environmentally competitive renewable energy resources. Fuel produc ...

Among the options for industrial waste heat recovery and reuse which are currently discussed, heat pumping receives far less attention than other technologies (e.g. organic rankine cycles). This, in particular, can be linked to a lack of comprehensive meth ...

Industries consume large quantities of energy and water in their processes which are often considered to be peripheral to the process operation. Energy is used to heat or cool water for process use; additionally, water is frequently used in production supp ...

The growing desire to improve resource efficiency and environmental impact of industrial processes is directly linked to optimal management of heat, mass and power flows. The concept of industrial symbiosis tackles this issue by proposing interplant heat r ...

An optimization method based on Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) has been developed for simultaneous optimization of water and energy (SOWE) in industrial processes. The superstructure integrates process thermal streams and optimizes the consumption ...

Efficient consumption of energy and material resources, including water, is the primary focus for process industries to reduce their environmental impact. The Conference of Parties in Paris (COP21) highlighted the prominent role of industrial energy effici ...
