The pattern-oriented memory (POM) is a novel historical rainfall interpolation method that explicitly takes into account the time dimension in order to interpolate areal rainfall maps. The method is based on the idea that rainfall patterns exist and can be ...

Dam safety is strongly linked to the probability of occurrence of large floods. Floods can transport large wood (LW) into reservoirs and towards water release structures as spillways. Due to blocking and clogging, LW may significantly influence the dischar ...

The Battle of the Water Networks II (BWN-II) is the latest of a series of competitions related to the design and operation of water distribution systems (WDSs) undertaken within the Water Distribution Systems Analysis (WDSA) Symposium series. The BWN-II pr ...

The present article proposes a methodology to consider the uncertainty intrinsic to data-based models when comparing their performance. The goal is to provide a quantification of the variability of this type of models due to the random nature of the calibr ...

Recent natural disasters that seriously affected critical infrastructure (CI) with significant socio-economic losses and impact revealed the need for the development of reliable methodologies for vulnerability and risk assessment. In this paper, a risk-bas ...

Sediment transport in suspension can represent more than 90% of a river's total annual flux of sediment. In the case of the Yangtze River, more than 99% of the sediment supplied to the sea is suspended load. Suspended sediment is thus an important componen ...

The Zambezi river basin, one of the largest in Africa, holds significant hydropower potential, which has yet tobe exploited. To make the most of this opportunity and address the challenges it poses, local Stakeholders must coordinate efforts, politically, ...

Spillways are designed to evacuate floods in a safe way. They should safely release water in order to avoid dam overtopping with its related damages. Nevertheless, it may be dangerous to assume that a flood is only carrying “clear” water. Large woody debri ...

As the need for energy is increasing, the challenges in the future are to operate existing large hydraulic schemes in more sustainable ways and to develop future water resources projects that are able to achieve a better balance between environmental and s ...

We study the phase diagram of 5-dimensional SU(2) Yang-Mills theory on the lattice. We consider two extensions of the fundamental plaquette Wilson action in the search for the continuous phase transition suggested by the 4 + epsilon expansion. The extensio ...

The paper describes and discusses the application of a guided evolutionary approach for the optimization of water distribution networks. Initially developed for the Battle of the Water Networks II (BWN-II), the approach was adapted and improved for competi ...

Numerous stepped spillways were built to date, namely on RCC gravity dams or on valley flanks besides embankment or rockfill dams, while some others are currently under design or construction. In some cases, slope changes may be required on stepped chutes, ...

Ther is a standing challeng in obtaining long localized records of rainfall data in many large river basins of the developing world. Recent spaceborne instrumentation offers a constente source of rainfall information, but this information covers only a rel ...

The paper focuses on the development of the hydraulic–hydrological model used to simulate water resources management scenarios in the Zambezi River basin. The main challenges of the implementation of the model are the scarcity of continuous reliable discha ...

Floodplains are regions of great interest for environmental assessment as they constitute important ecological reserves and contribute efficiently to natural flood attenuation. However, the implementation of a model describing the basic hydrological behavi ...

Numerous stepped spillways were built during the last decades. In particular, a stepped spillway may be integrated economically into the downstream face of a RCC gravity dam, or on valley flanks besides embankment or rockfill dams, where slope changes may ...

Spillways are safety elements of dams that allow to release floods. They spill water to avoid overtopping with its potential structural damages at the dam and the downstream environment. Nevertheless it may be unsafe to assume that a flood only carries cle ...
