Lane density and lane flow distribution are utilised in the current study as characteristics of traffic dynamics for control and planning purposes in freeways with ITS systems. As part of an on-going research, the Lane Flow Distribution Ratio (LFDR) and th ...

We study the dynamical process of congestion formation for large-scale urban networks by exploring a unique dataset of taxi movements in a megacity. We develop a dynamic model based on a reaction and a diffusion term that properly reproduces the cascade ph ...

Proper positioning of ride-sourcing drivers may improve vacant travel times, waiting times, and matching opportunities. Herein, we evaluate the potential repositioning response of drivers when provided guidance based on estimates of their earnings in a sys ...

It has been recently proposed and tested that traffic in large urban regions (neighbourhoods) can be modelled dynamically at an aggregate level, if the neighbourhoods are uniformly congested. By exploiting the insights and the properties of a macroscopic f ...

n this paper, we integrate a three-dimensional Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (3D-MFD) modelling for mixed bi-modal urban traffic in a control framework for congested urban regions. The 3D-MFD relates the accumulation of cars and buses and the outflow (or ...

Traffic control for large-scale urban road networks remains a challenging problem. Aggregated dynamical models of city-scale traffic, based on the macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD), enable development of model-based perimeter control methods. Involving ...

We propose a methodology for identifying queue spillovers in city street networks with signalized intersections using data from conventional surveillance systems, such as counts and occupancy from loop detectors. The key idea of the proposed methodology is ...

Understanding travel behaviour in transportation system is key challenge to calibrate and simulate the usage of urban mobility networks. We define in this work a path-based centrality based on the simplicity of the path between two locations in road networ ...

A large part of the research utilizing the concept of Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (MFD) relies heavily on the PL model, an approximation of the trip completion rate derived for steady states. There exists an alternative method to the PL approximation. ...

A path to take passengers from single to shared rides: a study onridesplittingCaio Vitor Beojone1and Nikolas Geroliminis11Urban Transport Systems Laboratory, ́Ecole Polytechnique F ́ed ́erale de Lausanne,CH-1015, Switzerland.{caio.beojone@epfl.ch, nikolas. ...

The traditional methodology for estimating vehicle emissions based on vehicle miles traveled and average speed is not reliable because it does not consider the effects of congestion, control devices, and driving mode (cruise, acceleration, deceleration, an ...

Ride-sourcing system can provide passengers with fast and efficient service with a fleet of vehicles, while asymmetry between origin and destination distributions of trips, nonuniform passenger's demand for rides in different districts creates imbalances i ...

When a centrally operated ride-hailing company considers to enter a market already served by another company, it has to make a strategic decision about how to distribute its fleet among different regions in the area. This decision will be influenced by the ...

It was recently observed from empirical traffic data that by aggregating the highly scattered plots of flow versus density from individual loop detectors for city regions with homogeneous spatial distribution of congestion, the scatter significantly decrea ...

Emergency response systems in urban areas should be located to ensure adequate coverage and rapid response time. We develop a model for locating emergency vehicles on urban networks considering both spatial and temporal demand characteristics such as the p ...

Following about 40 years of successful deployment of coordinated traffic-responsive ramp control, a new generation is being developed for Minnesota's freeways based on density measurements, rather than flow rates. This was motivated from recent research in ...

Traffic management for large-scale urban road networks remains a challenging problem. Aggregated dynamical models of city-scale traffic, based on the macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD), enable development of model-based control schemes for use with the ...
