The unique structure and dynamics of the water hydrogen (H)-bond network enable a multitude of structures and chemical reactions in both bulk solutions and at interfaces. The underlying molecular interactions between water and dissolved electrolytes, organ ...

Water is the matrix of life and serves as a solvent for numerous physical and chemical processes. The origins of the nature of inhomogeneities that exist in liquid water and the time scales over which they occur remains an open question. Here, we report fe ...

The molecular structure of the hexadecane droplet/alkanol/water interface has been investigated using vibrational sum frequency scattering and second harmonic scattering. This combination of methods allows us to investigate the interfacial alkyl chain conf ...

We present a method to analyze complex spectral data, such as that obtained from vibrational sumfrequency generation (SFG), using Fourier filtering. The proposed filter locates the center frequency of all resonances in a complex data set. The analysis is u ...

Specific ion effects can influence many processes in aqueous solutions: protein folding, enzyme activity, self-assembly, and interface stabilization. Ionic amphiphiles are known to stabilize the oil/water interface, presumably by dipping their hydrophobic ...

The molecular ionic surface structure and charge of the electric double layer around a nanodroplet and its structural change induced by hydrophobic effects are measured using vibrational coherent surface scattering spectroscopy, second harmonic scattering, ...

The solvation of ions in a dielectric continuum is symmetric with respect to the sign of the ionic charge. Yet, many phenomena show indirect evidence that water may have a preference for negative charge: the vast majority of biological membrane interfaces ...

We study the impact of non-radiative defects on Auger recombination in c-plane InGaN/GaN single quantum wells (SQWs) in the efficiency droop regime using high injection time-resolved photoluminescence. The defect density in the SQW is controlled by tuning ...

Specific ion effects in aqueous solutions are investigated at the molecular, nanoscopic and macroscopic levels. Femtosecond elastic second harmonic scattering (fs-ESHS) is used here to assess the chemical effects of ions on molecular and nanoscopic length ...

A three-dimensional-phospholipid monolayer with tunable molecular structure was created on the surface of oil nanodroplets from a mixture of phospholipids, oil, and water. This simple nanoemulsion preparation technique generates an in situ prepared membran ...

Electrolytes interact with water in many ways: changing dipole orientation, inducing charge transfer, and distorting the hydrogen-bond network in the bulk and at interfaces. Numerous experiments and computations have detected short-range perturbations that ...

The use of a liquid microjet as a possible source of interest for Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) and Sum Frequency Generation (SFG) spectroscopy is examined. We measured non-resonant SHG scattering patterns from the air/water interface of a microjet of p ...

The production cross section of a top quark pair in association with a photon is measured in proton-proton collisions in the decay channel with two oppositely charged leptons (e(+/-)mu(-/+), e(+)e(-), or mu(+)mu(-)). The measurement is performed using 138 ...

The surface tension of electrolyte solutions exhibits a minimum at millimolar electrolyte concentrations and then rises with increasing concentration. This minimum, known as the Jones-Ray effect, has been hotly debated over the past 80 years. If not consid ...

Three-dimensional (3D) phospholipid monolayers at hydrophobic surfaces are ubiquitous and found in nature as adiposome organelles or in man-made materials such as drug delivery systems. However, the molecular level understanding of such monolayers remains ...
