Confronted with the explosion of computing power and the vast quantities of materials data thus produced, Gray proposed in 2009 the “Fourth Paradigm of Science: Data-Intensive Discovery through Data Exploration (eScience)" [Gray, J. (2009). The Fourth Para ...

The prediction of the transverse wall beam impedance at the first unstable betatron line (8kHz) of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is of paramount importance for understanding and controlling the related coupled-bunch instabilities. Until now only nov ...

Quantum spin Hall insulators make up a class of two-dimensional materials with a finite electronic band gap in the bulk and gapless helical edge states. In the presence of time-reversal symmetry, Z(2) topological order distinguishes the topological phase f ...

The LHC collimation system is a critical element for the safe operation of the LHC machine. The necessity of fast accurate positioning of the collimator's jaws, recently introduced the need to have button beam position monitors directly embedded in the jaw ...

Two-dimensional(2D) materials are among the most promising candidatesfor beyond-silicon electronic, optoelectronic, and quantum computingapplications. Recently, their recognized importance sparked a pushto discover and characterize novel 2D materials. With ...

The ever-growing availability of computing power and the sustained development of advanced computational methods have contributed much to recent scientific progress. These developments present new challenges driven by the sheer amount of calculations and d ...

In this thesis, the problem of the transverse coupled-bunch instabilities created by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) beam-coupling impedance, that can possibly limit the machine operation, is addressed thanks to several new theories and tools. A rather com ...

Despite the enormous success and popularity of density-functional theory, systematic verification and validation studies are still limited in number and scope. Here, we propose a protocol to test publicly available pseudopotential libraries, based on sever ...
