In this paper, we analyze the electric field at ground level during the first stage of triggered lightning experiments, i.e., during the rocket ascent and prior to the lightning initiation. At distances of some tens of meters from the triggering wire, the ...

The response of local lightning to local surface temperature is examined near the Säntis mountain (2502 m ASL) in the eastern Swiss Alps during the first of the two hiatuses in global warming covering the time periods 1940-1972 and 1998-2014. The mountain ...

Lightning presents a significant danger to electrical and electronic equipment, buildings and monuments, people and animals. Although our knowledge about lightning has significantly improved over last century, the development of new composite materials and ...

Upward lightning flashes from towers are sometimes preceded by other lightning activity in the vicinity of the tower. This observation has led to a classification of upward tower lightning into self-initiated, which are not preceded by nearby lightning act ...

The standard lightning waveforms used for the testing of aircraft are based on downward lightning. However, there is evidence suggesting that lightning to aircraft is different from negative downward lightning. Also, carbon fiber composite materials are be ...

The use of sensitive electronics in avionics and wind generation systems, as well as the introduction of lower-conductivity composite materials make it important to ensure adequate lightning testing of airplanes and wind turbines. Evidence exists suggestin ...

We compare in this paper direct measurements obtained at the Towers on Mount San Salvatore (Switzerland) and the Gaisberg Tower (Austria). They are situated in similar topographical environments but in different lightning activity zones. Direct measurement ...

In this paper we present an online database where we have collected a number of reports on extreme lightning parameters: peak current, fastest and slowest rise time, fastest and slowest time to half value, rate of change of current, flash duration, charge ...

In this paper, we present an analysis of the lightning events preceding initiation of upward lightning flashes from the Gaisberg and the Santis Towers. It is found that the majority of upward lightning discharges from both towers are initiated without any ...

Severe weather events are responsible for hundreds of fatalities and millions of euros of damage every year in the Mediterranean basin. Lightning activity is a characteristic phenomenon of severe weather and often accompanies torrential rainfall, which und ...

We compare in this paper direct measurements obtained on the towers on San Salvatore Mountain (Switzerland) and on the Gaisberg Mountain (Austria). They are situated in similar topographical environments but in different lightning activity zones. Direct me ...

We present in this lecture an overview of different approaches for the evaluation of lightning incidence to tall structures with special emphasis on wind turbines.
