Nanoscale mechanical oscillators(1) are used as ultrasensitive detectors of force(2), mass(3) and charge(4). Nanomechanical oscillators have also been coupled with optical and electronic resonators to explore the quantum properties of mechanical systems(5) ...

Electromagnetically induced transparency is a quantum interference effect observed in atoms and molecules, in which the optical response of an atomic medium is controlled by an electromagnetic field. We demonstrated a form of induced transparency enabled b ...

We report the generation of an octave-spanning optical frequency comb in a continuous wave laser pumped microresonator. The generated comb spectrum covers the wavelength range from 990 to 2170 nm without relying on additional external broadening. Continuou ...

We report a room-temperature measurement of nanomechanical motion with an imprecision below the standard quantum limit (SQL), using cavity-enhanced optical near fields. Fundamental thermodynamical cavity frequency fluctuation limits the total imprecision t ...

Optical frequency combs allow for the precise measurement of optical frequencies and are used in a growing number of applications. The new class of Kerr-frequency comb sources, based on parametric frequency conversion in optical microresonators, can comple ...

Cooling a mesoscopic mechanical oscillator to its quantum ground state is elementary for the preparation and control of quantum states of mechanical objects. Here, we pre-cool a 70-MHz micromechanical silica oscillator to an occupancy below 200 quanta by t ...

We employ silica microspheres to detect and actuate nanomechanical motion. With Si3N4-nanostrings, we achieve significant passive cooling by radiation pressure. Feedback-cooling enables stable operation at optical powers beyond the parametric-instability t ...

We report on measurements of phase noise dynamics of microwave beat notes observed in low repetition rate silicon nitride based Kerr-comb generators and relate them to results from dispersion simulations and measurements. (C) 2011 Optical Society of Americ ...

The rapid development of micro- and nanomechanical oscillators in the past decade has led to the emergence of novel devices and sensors that are opening new frontiers in both applied and fundamental science. The potential of these devices is however affect ...

We experimentally investigate the initial dynamics of Kerr-frequency comb formation in crystalline MgF2 and planar Si3N4 microresonator and present a universal, platform independent condition for low phase noise performance. ...

Periodically structured materials can sustain both optical and mechanical modes. Here we investigate and observe experimentally the optomechanical properties of a conventional two-dimensional suspended photonic crystal defect cavity with a mode volume of s ...

We realize an integrated hybrid optonanomechanical transducer for the detection of weak forces. We propose and demonstrate with our system that dissipative feedback dramatically decreases the averaging time necessary to detect an incoherent force. (C) 2011 ...
