This paper aims to analyse the anisotropic features of behaviour of Opalinus Clay using the theory of plastic multi-mechanisms. The results of triaxial tests conducted with different load levels and directions showed that the mechanical behaviour of this s ...

Research interest in the thermo-mechanical behaviour of unsaturated soils is growing as a result of an increasing number of geomechanical problems involving both thermal and unsaturated effects. In this framework, this paper addresses a unified thermo-mech ...

The trend in modern unsaturated soil mechanics is to enhance the physical understanding of the soil water retention properties. It is agreed that the retention characteristics depend on the state of compaction and are related to the deformability of the me ...

In order to characterize the water retention behavior of fine soils, very high suction values have to be applied. In this range of values, the vapor equilibrium technique is usually used. This paper presents an innovative device, a sorption bench, which pe ...

Damage induced by desiccation (i.e. drying shrinkage and cracking) is an issue to be investigated in deep geological nuclear waste storage engineering. A dried and cracked zone can form in the underground gallery host shale due to ventilation effects. Incr ...

The paper presents an experimental and modelling approach for the soil water retention behaviour of two deformable soils. The objective is to investigate the physical mechanisms that govern the soil water retention properties and to propose a constitutive ...

This paper presents a unified thermo-mechanical experimental study on a remoulded unsaturated sandy silt and brings a contribution to the understanding of the fundamental mechanics of unsaturated soils in non- isothermal conditions. The experimental progra ...

The Opalinus Clay is a potential host rock for radioactive waste repositories. Triaxial tests at different load levels and directions carried out on Opalinus clay showed that the mechanical behaviour of this soft rock is anisotropic. The stiffer samples ar ...

The water retention capacity of geomaterials, and especially clayey soils, is sensitive to temperature changes as the physical mechanisms of retention, such as capillarity or adsorption, are affected by it. It is therefore a major issue to be able to defin ...
