The RILEM technical committee 282-CCL: Calcined Clays as Supplementary Cementitious Materials, investigates all the aspects related to calcined clays, from clay exploration and characterization to calcination process, hydration reactions and concrete prope ...

The combination of calcined kaolinitic clays and limestone in Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) is a promising approach to reduce the cost and the CO2 emissions of cement production by reducing the clinker content of cement. This thesis investigates the ...

The durability of mortar and paste mixtures with respect to chloride ion ingress was investigated for binary blends of Portland Cement Calcined Clay, and ternary systems of Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3). Five clays from various sources with differen ...

This paper examines the possibility of the use of some clays calcined from Nigeria as partial substitutes for clinker in the production of Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3). The clays were calcined in the oven at a temperature of 800 degrees C and for o ...

RILEM TC 267 TRM- "Tests for Reactivity of Supplementary Cementitious Materials" recommends the Rapid Reliable Relevant (R-3) test as a method for determining the chemical reactivity of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in Portland cement blends. ...

This paper details the main factors influencing the performance of limestone calcined clay cements (LC3). The kaolinite content plays a major role in the rheological properties as well as strength development. Even in the presence of secondary phases, kaol ...

The results of phase 1 of an interlaboratory test, coordinated by the RILEM TC 267-TRM "Tests for Reactivity of Supplementary Cementitious Materials" showed that the R-3 (rapid, relevant, reliable) test method, by measurement of heat release or bound water ...

This study aims to demonstrate the robustness of concrete made of limestone calcined clay cement (LC3). Two campaigns were carried out using 375 kg.m(-3) and 500 kg.m(-3) of binder and targeting plastic and self-placing workability, respectively. The concr ...

Corrosion of metal reinforcement is the most important durability concern of concrete infrastructures. In this research, chloride transport in mortars prepared using ternary blends of OPC-calcined clay-limestone (LC3) as the cementitious materials is asses ...

Although supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) are now commonly accepted and widely used, consensus has not been reached for methods to test their chemical reactivity. A multitude of test methods exist but often fall short on one or more of the key f ...

This study aims to investigate the change with temperature of the water content of the C-(A)-S-H of plain cement (PC) and Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3). The water content was determined by various methods: thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), H-1-nucle ...

The amount of reacted metakaolin is determined using two methods: mass balance and thermodynamic modeling. It is found that mass balance is the most promising method. Thermodynamic modeling gives slightly underestimated results at late ages. ...

Factors which could explain the slowing down of the metakaolin reaction in LC3 blends are investigated. Portlandite availability and the presence of aluminium ions in the pore solution are shown not to be limiting factors. ...

The use of calcined clays as supplementary cementitious materials provides the opportunity to significantly reduce the cement industry's carbon burden; however, use at a global scale requires a deep understanding of the extraction and processing of the cla ...

In this study, the C-A-S-H composition, morphology and density are characterized for Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3-50) blends containing clays with various kaolinite contents. Significant incorporation of aluminium is observed for LC3-50 blends compa ...

The high solution to solid ratio normally used for the measurement of chloride binding isotherms, leads to a leaching of ions and a decrease of pH. To make binding test more representative of on-site conditions, we investigated the influence of the increas ...

This paper reports the strength-promoting mechanism of alkanolamines on limestone-calcined clay cement (LC3). The hydration kinetics, phase formation and microstructure of LC3 with triethanolamine (TEA) or triisopropanolamine (TIPA) were investigated. TEA ...

In this study, the influence of the calcined kaolinite content of calcined clay on the hydration of Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3-50) is investigated. It is shown that with the increase of the calcined kaolinite content of the calcined clay, the clin ...
