Nowadays inertial sensors are extensively used for gait analysis. They can be used to perform temporal event detection (i.e. step detection) and to estimate the orientation of the feet and other body segments to determine walking speed and distance. Usuall ...

Inertial sensor drift is usually corrected on a single-sensor unit level. When multiple sensor units are used, mutual information from different units can be exploited for drift correction. This study introduces a method for a drift-reduced estimation of t ...

In daily life, a person’s gait—an important marker for his/her health status—is usually assessed using inertial sensors fixed to lower limbs or trunk. Such sensor locations are not well suited for continuous and long duration measurements. A better locatio ...

A key point in human movement analysis is measuring the trajectory of a person’s center of mass (CoM). For outdoor applications, differential Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) can be used for tracking persons since they allow measuring the traject ...

In Paralympic cross-country sit skiing, athlete classification is performed by an expert panel, so it may be affected by subjectivity. An evidence-based classification is required, in which objective measures of impairment must be identified. The purposes ...

The present study investigates if inertial sensors could be used for reconstructing 3D full body movements in sports. On the example of alpine ski racing, it was demonstrated that inertial sensors allow computing meaningful parameters related to a skier’s ...

The present study proposes a method based on ski fixed inertial sensors to automatically compute spatio-temporal parameters (phase durations, cycle speed and cycle length) for the diagonal stride in classical cross-country skiing. The proposed system was v ...

The aim of the study was to quantify the vibrations occurring at the lower limbs and the trunk during alpine ski racing. Four European Cup level athletes skied each three runs on a typical giant slalom course. For each turn, power spectral density (PSD) of ...

For analysing performance in alpine ski racing, an accurate estimation of the skier’s centre of mass trajectory and speed is indispensable. However, the sole use of low-cost GNSS might not be accurate enough to detect meaningful differences. The aim of thi ...

For performance analysis in alpine ski racing, an accurate and precise estimation of the centre of mass (CoM) kinematics is indispensable. Currently available systems satisfying this need are video-based stereo-photogrammetry or differential global navigat ...

For the purpose of gaining a deeper understanding of the relationship between external training load and health in competitive alpine skiing, an accurate and precise estimation of the athlete's kinematics is an essential methodological prerequisite. This s ...

A method for contactlessly determining an exact passage of an athlete at points placed along a track in sports, wherein the method comprises gearing the athlete with a wearable magnetometer sensor unit, whereby the magnetometer sensor unit is equipped with ...

To obtain valid 3D joint angles with inertial sensors careful sensor-to-segment calibration (i.e. functional or anatomical calibration) is required and measured angular velocity at each sensor needs to be integrated to obtain segment and joint orientation ...

This study proposes three simple approaches to estimate the stride count and frequency during walking and running using an inertial measurement system on the wrist. The approaches were based on a time-domain, frequency-domain and autocorrelation analysis, ...

This paper describes the development of a sport watch, as well as the software and hardware required to design an integrated solution for getting feedback during and after walking and running activities. The developed system is autonomous, so that neither ...

In this study an algorithm designed for the diagonal stride in classical cross-country skiing was adapted to compute spatio-temporal parameters for uphill ski mountaineering using a ski fixed inertial sensor. Cycle duration, thrust duration, cycle speed, c ...
