It is now commonly accepted that the unit disk graph used to model the physical layer in wireless networks does not reflect real radio transmissions, and that a more realistic model should be considered for experimental simulations. Previous work on realis ...

A field measurement campaign was conducted from June to October 2009 in a 20 km2 catchment of the Swiss Alps with a wireless network of 12 weather stations and river discharge monitoring. The objective was to investigate the spatial variability of meteorol ...

SensorScope is a turnkey solution for environmental monitoring systems, based on a wireless sensor network and resulting from a collaboration between environmental and network researchers. Given the interest in climate change, environmental monitoring is a ...

We present a minimum spanning tree based energy aware multicast protocol (MSTEAM), which is a localized geographic multicast routing scheme designed for ad hoc and sensor networks. It uses locally-built minimum spanning trees (MST) as an efficient approxim ...

The low quality of wireless links leads to perpetual packet losses. While an acknowledgment mechanism is generally used to cope with these losses, multiple retransmissions nevertheless occur. Opportunistic routing limits these retransmissions by taking adv ...

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the base station (BS) is a critical sensor node whose failure causes severe data losses. Deploying multiple fixed BSs improves the robustness, yet requires all BSs to be installed with large batteries and large energy-ha ...

We present a turnover based adaptive HELLO protocol (TAP), which enables nodes in mobile networks to dynamically adjust their HELLO messages frequency depending on the current speed of nodes. To the best of our knowledge, all existing solutions are based o ...

While wireless sensor networks have been extensively studied in the past few years, most results are of theoretical nature and were obtained outside of a practical context. This can be problematic for real applications, especially in the area of environmen ...

An important field of application for wireless sensor networks is environmental monitoring. Given the importance of potential climate changes, environmental impact on cities, and pollution, it is an application domain where sensor networks can have great i ...

The successful deployment of a wireless sensor network is a difficult task, littered with traps and pitfalls. Even a functional network does not guarantee gathering meaningful data. In SensorScope, with its high-mountain campaigns, we have acquired invalua ...

SensorScope is a collaborative project between network, signal processing, and environmental researchers that aims at providing a cheap and out-of-the-box environmental monitoring system based on a wireless sensor network. It has been successfully used in ...

Given the importance of climate changes and their potentially dramatic consequences for human beings, designing precise and reliable evolution models is of prime importance. Unfortunately, current data collection techniques are rather limited as they make ...
