A four-dimensional plasma model able to describe the scrape-off layer region of tokamak devices at arbitrary collisionality is derived in the drift-reduced limit. The basis of the model is provided by a drift-kinetic equation that retains the full nonlinea ...

This paper uses the gyro-moment (GM) approach as a multi-fidelity tool to explore the effect of triangularity on tokamak edge turbulence. Considering experimental data from an L-mode DIII-D discharge, we conduct gyrokinetic (GK) simulations with realistic ...

The first results of three-dimensional, flux-driven, electrostatic, global, two-fluid turbulence simulations of a diverted tokamak configuration with applied resonant magnetic perturbations generated by a set of saddle coils are presented. The simulations ...

We investigate the time evolution of the mean location and variance of a charged particle subject to random collisions that are Poisson distributed. The particle moves on a plane and is subject to a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the plane, so it ...

A unique parabolic relation is observed to link skewness and kurtosis of density fluctuation signals, measured over the whole cross-section of the simple toroidal device TORPEX for a broad range of experimental conditions. This relationship is also valid f ...

A physics and engineering analysis of alternative divertor configurations is carried out by examining benefits and problems by comparing the baseline single null solution with a Snowflake, an X- and a Super-X divertor. It is observed that alternative confi ...

The physical mechanisms regulating the power sharing at the outer targets of L-mode double-null (DN) configurations are investigated using nonlinear, flux-driven, three-dimensional two-fluid simulations. Scans of parameters that regulate the turbulent leve ...

A gyrokinetic model is presented that can properly describe large and small amplitude electromagnetic fluctuations occurring on scale lengths ranging from the electron Larmor radius to the equilibrium perpendicular pressure gradient scale length, and the a ...

The transition from a regime dominated by drift instabilities to a regime dominated by pure interchange instabilities is investigated and characterized in the simple magnetized toroidal device TORPEX [TORoidal Plasma EXperiment, A. Fasoli et al., Phys. of ...

Two-fluid, three-dimensional, flux-driven, global, electromagnetic turbulence simulations carried out by using the GBS (Global Braginskii Solver) code are used to identify the main parameters controlling turbulent transport in the tokamak boundary and to d ...

Mechanisms setting the density decay in the scrape-off layer (SOL) at the outer midplane of a tokamak plasma are disentangled using two-fluid numerical simulations in a double-null magnetic configuration and analytical estimates. Typical experimental obser ...

We develop a model to investigate the time evolution of the mean location and variance of a random walker subject to Poisson-distributed collisions at constant rate. The collisions are instantaneous velocity changes where a new value of velocity is generat ...

A gyrokinetic Coulomb collision operator is derived, which is particularly useful to describe the plasma dynamics at the periphery region of magnetic confinement fusion devices. The derived operator is able to describe collisions occurring in distribution ...

Turbulent full-f simulations in a linear plasma device are presented. Extending the work of Frei et al (2024 Phys. Plasmas 31 012301), the simulations are based on a drift-kinetic (DK) model that includes corrections associated with higher-order drifts and ...

The mechanism for blob generation is detailed in the toroidal magnetized plasma of the TORPEX device [ Fasoli et al., Phys. Plasmas 13, 055902 (2006) ] using an experimental configuration, which features a plasma region dominated by a coherent wave and a r ...

In a magnetized toroidal plasma, an antenna tunable in vertical wave number is used to excite density perturbations. Coherent detection is performed by means of Langmuir probes to directly determine both the wave vector and the plasma response induced by t ...

The effect of plasma shaping on scrape-off layer (SOL) plasma turbulence is investigated through a rigorous validation exercise. Two- and three-dimensional simulations of the SOL plasma dynamics in three TCV limited discharges are carried out with the GBS ...

We report on the implementation of diverted magnetic equilibria in GBS and on first simulations in this geometry. GBS is a simulation code used to evolve plasma turbulence in the tokamak periphery by solving the drift-reduced Braginskii's equations. The mo ...

Three-dimensional fluid simulations are performed in a simple magnetized toroidal plasma, in which vertical and toroidal magnetic fields create helicoidal magnetic field lines that terminate on the torus vessel. The simulations are carried out in the three ...
