Magnetic skyrmions are promising candidates as information carriers in logic or storage devices thanks to their robustness, guaranteed by the topological protection, and their nanometric size. Currently, little is known about the influence of parameters su ...

We use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to investigate charge-stripe correlations in La1.675Eu0.2Sr0.125CuO4. By differentiating elastic from inelastic scattering, it is demonstrated that charge-stripe correlations precede both the structural low-temper ...

We measured NMR and magnetic susceptibility for the quasi-two-dimensional, weakly XY-like, spin-1/2 square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet [CuCl(pyz)(2)]BF4 (pyz = pyrazine = N2C4H4) near the critical temperature. The Neel temperature T-N and the order- ...

Exotic magnetic textures emerging from the subtle interplay between thermodynamic and topological fluctuation have attracted intense interest due to their potential applications in spintronic devices. Recent advances in electron microscopy enable the imagi ...

The excitations responsible for producing high-temperature superconductivity in the copper oxides have yet to be identified. Two promising candidates are collective spin excitations and phonons(1). A recent argument against spin excitations is based on the ...

Many physical properties of high-temperature superconductors are two-dimensional phenomena derived from their square-planar CuO2 building blocks. This is especially true of the magnetism from the copper ions. As mobile charge carriers enter the CuO2 layers ...

In condensed matter systems, the atoms, electrons or spins can sometimes arrange themselves in ways that result in unexpected properties but that cannot be detected by conventional experimental probes. Several historical and contemporary examples of such h ...

We present experimental evidence for a quantum phase transition in the easy-axis S=3/2 anisotropic quasi-one-dimensional ferromagnet CoCl2⋅2D2O in a transverse field. Elastic neutron scattering shows that the magnetic order parameter vanishes at a transver ...

While in 3D materials melting is a single, first-order phase transition, in 2D systems, it can also proceed via an intermediate phase. For a skyrmion lattice in Cu2OSeO3, magnetic field variations can tune this quasiparticle 2D solid into a skyrmion liquid ...

Devices have been fabricated based on the bilayer manganite La1.4Sr1.6Mn2O7, which in the bulk state orders magnetically below 90 K, at which point both in-plane and c-axis bulk resistivity decrease by 2-3 orders of magnitude. We provide an optimized proce ...

We present an experimental study of the two-dimensional S=1/2 square-lattice antiferromagnet Cu(pz)(2)(ClO4)(2) (pz denotes pyrazine-C4H4N2) using specific-heat measurements, neutron diffraction, and cold-neutron spectroscopy. The magnetic field dependence ...

Magnetic skyrmions are vortexlike topological spin textures often observed in structurally chiral magnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Among them, Co-Zn-Mn alloys with a beta-Mn-type chiral structure host skyrmions above room temperature. In thi ...

Control of magnetization and electric polarization is attractive in relation to tailoring materials for data storage and devices such as sensors or antennae. In magnetoelectric materials, these degrees of freedom are closely coupled, allowing polarization ...

We report a high-resolution resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering study of the quantum magnetic spin-chain materials Li2CuO2 and CuGeO3. By tuning the incoming photon energy to the oxygen K edge, a strong excitation around 3.5 eV energy loss is clearly ...

We have investigated the effect of Ca substitution for Sr site on structural, magnetic and superconducting properties of RuSr2-xCaxGd1.4Ce0.6Cu2O10-delta system. In this system, the magnetic coupling of RuO2 and CuO2 plays an important role in magnetic and ...

Magnetic helices and skyrmions in noncentrosymmetric magnets are representative examples of chiral spin textures in solids. Their spin swirling direction, often termed as the magnetic helicity and defined as either left handed or right handed, is uniquely ...

A detailed zero-and transverse-field muon spin rotation investigation of magnetism and the magnetoelectric coupling in Cu2OSeO3 is reported. An internal magnetic field B-int(T = 0) = 85.37(25) mT was found, in agreement with a ferrimagnetic state below T-c ...

Sc2Ga2CuO7 (SGCO) crystallizes in a hexagonal structure (space group: P63/mmc), which can be seen as an alternating stacking of single and double triangular layers. Combining neutron, x-ray, and resonant x-ray diffraction, we establish that the single tria ...

The excitation spectrum of a model magnetic system, LiHoF4, was studied with the use of neutron spectroscopy as the system was tuned to its quantum critical point by an applied magnetic field. The electronic mode softening expected for a quantum phase tran ...

LiCu3O3 is an antiferromagnetic mixed valence cuprate where trilayers of edge -sharing Cu(II)O (3d9) are sandwiched in between planes of Cu(I) (3d10) ions, with Li stochastically substituting Cu(II). Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and de ...
