We investigate the magnetic order in single crystalline EuCd2Sb2 thin films using a combined theoretical and experimental approach. Resonant elastic x-ray scattering experiments reveal a sharp magnetic peak at q=(0,0,12) below TN=7.2 K, indicative of inter ...

Studying multi-particle elementary excitations has provided unique access to understand collective many-body phenomena in correlated electronic materials, paving the way towards constructing microscopic models. In this work, we perform O K-edge resonant in ...

We report the structural and magnetic properties of the 4d (M = Rh) based and 5d ( M = Ir) based systems Ba3MxTi3-xO9 ( nominally x = 0.5, 1). The studied compositions were found to crystallize in a hexagonal structure with the centrosymmetric space group ...

Skyrmions are chiral magnetic textures with non-trivial topology, and due to their unique properties they are widely considered as promising information carriers in novel magnetic storage applications. While electric field writing/erasing and manipulation ...

Quantum magnets display a wide variety of collective excitations, including spin waves (magnons), coherent singlet-triplet excitations (triplons), and pairs of fractional spins (spinons). These modes differ radically in nature and properties, and in all co ...

Quantum matter phases may coexist microscopically even when they display competing tendencies. A fundamental question is whether such a competition can be avoided through the elimination of one phase while the other one condenses into the ground state. Her ...

We report inelastic x-ray scattering experiments on the lattice dynamics in SmFeAsO and superconducting SmFeAsO0.60F0.35 single crystals. Particular attention was paid to the dispersions along the [100] direction of three optical modes close to 23 meV, pol ...

Skyrmions, topologically protected vortex-like nanometric spin textures in magnets, have been attracting increasing attention for emergent electromagnetic responses and possible technological applications for spintronics. In particular, metallic magnets wi ...

We examine the role of charge, structural, and spin degrees of freedom in the previously poorly understood phase transition in the 5d1 transition-metal double perovskite Cs2TaCl6 using a combination of computational and experimental techniques. Our heat ca ...

We present spatial and dynamic information on the s = 1/2 distorted kagome antiferromagnet volborthite, Cu3V2O7(OD)(2) center dot 2D(2)O, obtained by polarized and inelastic neutron scattering. The instantaneous structure factor, S(Q), is dominated by near ...

Sr2IrO4 is a prototype of the class of Mott insulators in the strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) limit described by a J(eff) = 1/2 ground state. In Sr2IrO4, the strong SOI is predicted to manifest itself in the locking of the canting of the magnetic momen ...

We explore the interplay between randomness and magnetic frustration in the series of S = 12 Heisenberg square-lattice compounds Sr2CuTe1???xWxO6. Substituting W for Te alters the magnetic interactions dramatically, from strongly nearest-neighbor to next-n ...

Multiple-q spin order, i.e., a spin texture characterized by a multiple number of coexisting magnetic modulation vectors q, has recently attracted attention as a source of nontrivial magnetic topology and associated emergent phenomena. One typical example ...

A remarkable feature of layered transition-metal oxides-most famously, the high-temperature superconductors-is that they can display hugely anisotropic electrical and optical properties (for example, seeming to be insulating perpendicular to the layers and ...

We report on the design and characterization of single-chip electron spin resonance (ESR) detectors operating at 50 GHz, 92 GHz, and 146 GHz. The core of the single-chip ESR detectors is an integrated LC-oscillator, formed by a single turn aluminum planar ...

We investigate the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on a rectangular lattice, using the Gutzwiller projected variational wave function known as the staggered flux state. Using Monte Carlo techniques, the variational parameters and instantaneous spin-spin correlat ...

The magnetic structures adopted by the Fe and Sm sublattices in SmFeAsO have been investigated using element-specific x-ray resonant and nonresonant magnetic scattering techniques. Between 110 and 5 K, the Sm and Fe moments are aligned along the c and a di ...

Polarized and unpolarized neutron-diffraction studies have been carried out on single crystals of the coupled spin tetrahedra systems Cu2Te2O5X2 (X=Cl, Br). A model of the magnetic structure associated with the propagation vectors k(') (Cl) approximate to ...

The magnetic excitation spectrum in the bilayer iridate Sr3Ir2O7 has been investigated using high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) performed at the iridium L-3 edge and theoretical techniques. A study of the systematic dependence of th ...

In quantum magnetic materials, ordered phases induced by an applied magnetic field can be described as the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnon excitations. In the strongly frustrated system SrCu2(BO3)(2), no clear magnon BEC could be observed, point ...
