Gyrotron R&D within the EUROfusion Work Package Heating and Current Drive (WPHCD) is addressing the challenging requirements posed on gyrotrons by the European concept for a demonstration fusion power plant (EU DEMO). These requirements, as specified withi ...

In Europe, the research and development with main focus on achieving robust industrial designs of series gyrotrons for electron cyclotron heating and current drive of today's nuclear fusion experiments and towards a future DEMOnstration fusion power plant ...

Computer aided design of powerful gyrotrons for electron cyclotron resonance heating and current drive of fusion plasmas requires adequate physical models and efficient software packages for analysis, comparison and optimization of their electron-optical s ...

The upgraded European 1-MW, 170-GHz continuous wave (CW) industrial prototype gyrotron (TH1509U) for electron cyclotron resonance heating and current drive in ITER was tested at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). In this work, we report on the ma ...

The engineering design and R&D of auxiliary heating systems and their sub-systems are a key activities in the frame of the present conceptual design phase for a first of a kind DEMOnstration Fusion Power Plant in order to develop a system capable of achiev ...

An 1 MW long-pulse (2s), 84/126 GHz dual frequency gyrotron has been produced by THALES MSI, France responding to the needs for upgrading the ECH system of the TCV tokamak The initial tests of the prototype carried out at EPFL, Switzerland, have verified a ...

The European Union is working toward providing 2-MW, coaxial-cavity, continuous-wave (cw) 170-GHz gyrotrons for ITER. Their design is based on results, from an experimental preprototype tube having a pulse length of several milliseconds, in operation at For ...

We report on the initial validation of the novel code FENNECS, which simulates the spontaneous formation of trapped electron clouds in coaxial geometries with strong externally applied azimuthal flows and in the presence of a residual neutral gas. For this ...

The future EC systems will consist of several gyrotron sources providing MW-level millimeter wave power at a frequency around or above 170 GHz. The development of matched loads is necessary to test the new sources, the components for the transmission lines ...

The European Gyrotron Consortium (EGYC) is developing the European 1 MW, 170 GHz Continuous Wave (CW) industrial prototype gyrotron for ITER in cooperation with Thales Electron Devices (TED) and Fusion for Energy (F4E). This conventional, hollow-cavity gyr ...

This paper describes the status on the upgrade of the first European gyrotron prototype for ITER, manufactured by Thales. The upgraded prototype, TH1509U, is now being tested to verify the performance improvements and to assess the compliance with ITER ECR ...

The magnetron injection gun (MIG) is one of the most critical subcomponents in gyrotrons. The electron beam, which has the primary role on the gyrotron operation, is generated and configured at this part of the tube. The electron beam properties determine ...

The aim of the WEST experiments is to master long plasma pulses (1000s) and expose ITER-like tungsten wall to deposited heat fluxes up to 10 MW/m2. To increase the margin to reach the H-Mode and to control W-impurities in the plasma, the installation of an ...

A large part of the gyrotron R&D activities at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology focus on addressing challenging requirements posed on gyrotrons by the European concept for a demonstration fusion power plant (EU DEMO). This paper reports on the progress of ...

The upgraded EU 1 MW, 170 GHz continuous wave (CW) industrial prototype gyrotron (TH1509U) for Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating and Current Drive (ECRH&CD) in ITER was tested at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The gyrotron surpassed the pe ...
