In many practical applications the state of field soils is monitored by recording the evolution of temperature and soil moisture at discrete depths. We theoretically investigate the systematic errors that arise when mass and energy balances are computed di ...

The multiscale finite-volume (MSFV) method has been developed to solve multiphase flow problems on large and highly heterogeneous domains efficiently. It employs an auxiliary coarse grid, together with its dual, to define and solve a coarse-scale pressure ...

Accurate estimates of water losses by evaporation from shallow water tables are important for hydrological, agricultural, and climatic purposes. An experiment was conducted in a weighing lysimeter to characterize the diurnal dynamics of evaporation under n ...

The water content dynamics in the upper soil surface during evaporation is a key element in land–atmosphere exchanges. Previous experimental studies have suggested that the soil water content increases at the depth of 5 to 15 cm below the soil surface duri ...

In lentic water bodies, such as lakes, the water temperature near the surface typically increases during the day, and decreases during the night as a consequence of the diurnal radiative forcing (solar and infrared radiation). These temperature variations ...

In a recent paper [R. Finn, Phys. Fluids 18, 047102 (2006)] the attention has been drawn on the tension component perpendicular to the solid surface that results from Young's law. Considering the problem of a solid sphere floating in zero gravity, it has b ...

Water retention curves approaching infinitely negative matric potentials at residual water content are widely employed to model soil moisture dynamics. When used in numerical simulations, these retention curves fail to satisfactorily describe evaporation f ...

In this paper, an extension of the multi-scale finite-volume (MSFV) method is devised, which allows to simulate flow and transport in reservoirs with complex well configurations. The new framework fits nicely into the data structure of the original MSFV me ...

The multiscale finite-volume (MSFV) method has been derived to efficiently solve large problems with spatially varying coefficients. The fine-scale problem is subdivided into local problems that can be solved separately and are coupled by a global problem. ...
