Recent advances in process synthesis, design, operations, and control have created an increasing demand for efficient numerical algorithms for optimizing a dynamic system coupled with discrete decisions; these problems are termed mixed-integer dynamic opti ...

Estimating the parameters of a dynamical system based on measurements is an important task in industrial and scientific practice. Since a model's quality is directly linked to its parameter values, obtaining globally rather than locally optimal values is e ...

In this paper, probabilistic observers are considered for a class of continuous biological processes described by mass-balance-based models. It is assumed that the probability density functions (PDFs) of the uncertain parameters and inputs of the model, as ...

This paper deals with input adaptation in dynamic processes in order to guarantee feasible and optimal operation despite the presence of uncertainty. The proposed adaptation consists in using the nominal optimal inputs and adding appropriately designed inp ...

This paper discusses the influence of time horizon on dynamic optimization of small-size wastewater treatment plants alternating aerobic and anoxic processes. The optimization problem consists in determining the aeration policy (air-on and air-off periods) ...

Portable electronic devices operate at varying power demand levels. This variability of power demand must be considered explicitly in the design of man-portable power generation systems for acceptable performance and portability. In this regard, a mathemat ...

The paper presents a dynamic optimisation study of a small size single basin wastewater treatment plant. The objective is to determine optimal sequences of aeration/non-aeration times so that for a typical diurnal pattern of disturbances, the effluent cons ...

uel cell based systems are a promising alternative to batteries in man-portable power generation applications. These micro power generation processes must operate fully autonomously and automatically without the intervention of operators. Operational consi ...

Recently, various alternatives to batteries, such as microfabricated fuel cell systems, have been proposed for portable power generation. In large-scale power production plants emphasis is placed on energy conversion efficiency. On the other hand, the intr ...

This paper presents a methodology for the optimal design and operation of man-portable power generation devices based on fuel cells. To illustrate the methodology, we focus on a simple process that consists of a fuel processing reactor, a solid-oxide fuel ...

The economic environment in the specialty chemicals industry requires short times to market and thus the ability to develop new products and processes very rapidly. This, in turn, calls for large scale-ups from laboratory to production. Due to scale-relate ...

The operation of wastewater treatment plants is challenging for many small communities for economical and technical reasons. In this work, optimal control of the aeration system is considered to improve the efficiency and reliability of the activated sludg ...

In this paper we propose a methodology to determine the structure of the pseudo-stoichiometric coefficient matrix K in a mass balance based model, i.e. the maximal number of biomasses that must be taken into account to reproduce an available data set. It c ...

A powerful approach for dynamic optimization in the presence of uncertainty is to incorporate measurements into the optimization framework so as to track the optimum. For nonsingular control problems, this can be done by tracking active constraints along b ...

An overview of a comprehensive methodology for the design of microfabricated fuel cell systems for portable power generation is presented. The methodology is based on a decomposition into three levels of modeling detail: (i) system-level models for process ...

This simulation study presents dynamic optimisation of a small size single basin wastewater treatment plant. The ob jectives are to determine an optimal sequence of aeration/non-aeration times and the corresponding periodical steady state sub ject to minim ...

In this paper, dynamic optimisation of small size wastewater treatment plants is studied. The problem is stated as a hybrid dynamic optimisation problem which is solved using a gradient-based method. The aeration policy which minimises the energy consumpti ...

In this paper, the design of probabilistic observers for mass-balance based bio- process models is investigated. It is assumed that the probability density function of every uncertain parameter, input and/or initial state is known a priori. Then, the proba ...

Dynamic optimization provides a unified framework for improving process operations while taking operational constraints into account. In the presence of uncertainty, measurements can be incorporated into the optimization framework for tracking the optimum. ...
