Progesterone is considered as the pregnancy hormone and acts on many different target tissues. Progesterone receptor (PR) signaling is important for normal development and the physiologic function of the breast and impinges on breast carcinogenesis. Both s ...

Steroid hormones coordinate and control the development and function of many organs and are implicated in many pathological processes. Progesterone signaling, in particular, is essential for several important female reproductive functions. Physiological ef ...

More than two-thirds of cancer-related deaths are attributable to metastases. In some tumor types metastasis can occur up to 20 years after diagnosis and successful treatment of the primary tumor, a phenomenon termed late recurrence. Metastases arise from ...

Background Estrogen receptor alpha (ER alpha) signaling is a defining and driving event in most breast cancers; ER alpha is detected in malignant epithelial cells of 75% of all breast cancers (classified as ER-positive breast cancer) and, in these cases, E ...

Simple Summary Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is the second most common histologic subtype of breast cancer and is often detected at an advanced stage. Up to 30% of ILC cases relapse and present a challenge for treatment. Unfortunately, there are few mod ...

17 beta-Estradiol induces the postnatal development of mammary gland and influences breast carcinogenesis by binding to the estrogen receptor ER alpha. ER alpha acts as a transcription factor but also elicits rapid signaling through a fraction of ER alpha ...

Simple Summary: Invasive lobular breast cancer (ILC) is the second most common histological subtype of invasive breast cancer, which is noted to have a unique microscopic appearance. The understanding of ILC biology is advancing through the evolution of va ...

Stem-like cells may be integral to the development and maintenance of human cancers. Direct proof is still lacking, mainly because of our poor understanding of the biological differences between normal and cancer stem cells (SCs). Using the ErbB2 transgeni ...

In the context of hormonal contraception and hormone replacement therapy (HRT), many women are exposed to exogenous hormones. Current use of hormonal contraception with combined ethinyl estradiol and different progestins bestows a breast cancer relative ri ...

Lobular carcinoma represent the most common special histological subtype of breast cancer, with the majority classed as hormone receptor positive. Rates of invasive lobular carcinoma in postmenopausal women have been seen to increase globally, while other ...

Worldwide, breast cancer incidence has been increasing for decades. Exposure to reproductive hormones, as occurs with recurrent menstrual cycles, affects breast cancer risk, and can promote disease progression. Exogenous hormones and endocrine disruptors h ...

Stromal fibroblast senescence has been linked to ageing-associated cancer risk. However, density and proliferation of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are frequently increased. Loss or downmodulation of the Notch effector CSL (also known as RBP-Jκ) in ...

Breast cancer strikes one out of eight women in Switzerland. The increase in breast cancer incidence over the past 70 years parallels an enormous increase of man-made, persistent chemicals in our environment; some of which have endocrine-disrupting propert ...

Bisphenol A [BPA, 2,2,-bis (hydroxyphenyl) propane] is one of the highest-volume chemicals produced worldwide. It is detected in body fluids of more than 90% of the human population. Originally synthesized as an estrogenic compound, it is currently utilize ...

Most of mammary gland development occurs postnatally under the control of female reproductive hormones, which in turn interact with other endocrine factors. While hormones impinge on many tissues and trigger very complex biological responses, tissue recomb ...

The epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is an embryonic process that becomes latent in most normal adult tissues. Recently, we have shown that induction of EMT endows breast epithelial cells with stem cell traits. In this report, we have further cha ...

To improve preclinical studies and their translation, patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) are increasingly used. They have human-specific tumor characteristics and reflect intra and inter-tumor heterogeneity. However, the endocrine milieu differs between hum ...

Langerhans cells (LC) are the dendritic APC population of the epidermis, where they reside for long periods and are self-replicating. The molecular signals underlying these characteristics are unknown. The TNF superfamily member receptor activator of NF-ka ...

We are now witnessing a resurgence of theories of development and carcinogenesis in which the environment is again being accepted as a major player in phenotype determination. Perturbations in the fetal environment predispose an individual to disease that ...

A recent publication by Bornes and colleagues explored the impact of the estrous cycle on mammary tumor response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Using genetically engineered mouse models, Bornes and colleagues revealed that chemotherapy is less effective when ...
