In this study, we aim to investigate if there is a scaling of the streamwise distance from a wind turbine that leads to a collapse of the mean wake velocity deficit under different ambient turbulence levels. For this purpose, we perform large-eddy simulati ...

LES and wind tunnel studies have shown significant benefit when allowing turbines (T) in a wind farm to adopt different heights. This work presents two new genetic algorithms (GA) that perform wind farm layout optimization (WFLO) involving continuous and t ...

A wind-tunnel experiment was performed to test surface boundary condition formulations for large-eddy simulation downwind of a rough-to-smooth surface transition in a turbulent boundary layer for (Re-tau approximate to 1.5 x 10(4)). Single and x-wire anemo ...

In a future sustainable energy vision, in which diversified conversion of renewable energies is essential, vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) exhibit some potential as a reliable means of wind energy extraction alongside conventional horizontal axis wind ...

In this study, large-eddy simulation (LES) is used to study the evolution of the wind-turbine wakes and their effects on power losses inside an idealized finite-size wind farm in the course of a full diurnal cycle. In the LES, turbulent subgrid-scale stres ...

Healthcare sector buildings, particularly hospitals, significantly contribute to global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Hospitals require a substantial amount of steam, including the essential hygienic or " clean steam, " that is currently ...

Large-eddy simulation (LES) is used to simulate stably-stratified turbulent boundary-layer flow over a steep two-dimensional hill. To parametrise the subgrid-scale (SGS) fluxes of heat and momentum, three different types of SGS models are tested: (a) the S ...

Recent studies have shown that streamwise variations in base flow velocity and the resulting pressure gradients can affect the induction and power of wind turbines. However, current research lacks analytical models that explicitly predict the effect of pre ...

In this study, a new analytical approach is presented and validated to predict wind farm power production. The new model is an extension of the recently proposed by Bastankhah and Porte-Agel for a single wake. It assumes a self-similar Gaussian shape of th ...

This paper presents a technique to measure the time series of the three components of the wind vector at a point in space from synchronous measurements of three scanning Doppler wind lidars. Knowing the position of each lidar on the ground and the orientat ...

Advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models typically achieve high accuracy in wind power forecasting, but their internal mechanisms lack interpretability, which undermines user confidence in forecast value and strategy execution. To this end, this paper ...

The development of floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) technology facilitates the exploration of deep-ocean wind resources. Meanwhile, there are still open questions on how the structural response will affect the performance of floating turbines and wind ...

Large-scale wind farms, covering a significant portion of the land and ocean surface, may affect the transport of momentum, heat, mass and moisture between the atmosphere and the land locally and globally. To understand the wind-farm-atmosphere interaction ...

The performance of the modulated-gradient subgrid-scale (SGS) model is investigated using large-eddy simulation (LES) of the neutral atmospheric boundary layer within the weather research and forecasting model. Since the model includes a finite-difference ...

Field measurements of the wake flow produced from a 2-MW Enercon E-70 wind turbine were performed using three scanning Doppler wind lidars. A GPS-based technique was used to determine the position of the wind turbine and the wind lidar locations, as well a ...

Large-eddy simulations (LES) are performed to simulate the atmospheric boundary-layer (ABL) flow through idealized urban canopies represented by uniform arrays of cubes in order to better understand atmospheric flow over rural-to-urban surface transitions. ...

The reduction in power output associated with complex turbine-wake interactions in wind farms necessitates the development of effective wake mitigation strategies. One approach to this end entails the downregulation of individual turbines from its maximum ...

A 21: 1 scaled sodar, operating at 40 kHz, has been built and tested in the laboratory. Sodars, which use sound scattered by turbulence to profile the lowest few hundred meters of the atmosphere, need good acoustic shielding to diminish annoyance and to re ...

This article provides a comprehensive review of the most recent advances in the planning, execution, and analysis of inflow and wake measurements from nacelle-mounted wind Doppler lidars. Lidars installed on top of wind turbines provide a holistic view of ...
