Wind-packed snow in the form of slabs or crusts is an important part of alpine and polar snow covers. Yet, the formation process of such layers is poorly understood. For example, it remains unclear whether drifting snow is necessary for wind-packing or not ...

An X-band polarimetric radar was deployed in the eastern Swiss Alps at an altitude of 2133 m. Radar measurements were complemented with several weather stations deployed in an altitude range from 1500 to 3100 m as well as with a fixed GPS ground station th ...

Surface snow in polar and mountainous regions is often mobile and this mobility influences surface mass balance and isotopic composition before final deposition, which is poorly understood thus far. In December 2016 and January 2017, during a field campaig ...

Accurate knowledge on snow distribution in alpine terrain is crucial for various applications such as flood risk assessment, avalanche warning or managing water supply and hydro-power. To simulate the seasonal snow cover development in alpine terrain, the ...

The influence of drifting and blowing snow on surface mass and energy exchange is difficult to quantify due to limitations in both measurements and models, but is still potentially very important over large areas with seasonal or perennial snow cover. We p ...

This dataset contains measurement and simulation data. The measurements characterize the standard meteorology, turbulence, and snow transport at the S17 site near Syowa Station in East Antarctica during an expedition in austral summer 2018/2019. Large-eddy ...

This study describes and evaluates a new downscaling scheme that specifically addresses the need for hillslope-scale atmospheric-forcing time series for modelling the local impact of regional climate change projections on the land surface in complex terrai ...

Mountain passes are potentially advantageous sites for the deployment of wind turbines because of road links and electrical transmission infrastructure. However, relatively little is known about wind characteristics and turbine response in these environmen ...

Many physically‐based models for climate change impact studies require sub‐daily temporal resolution of the forcing data to provide meaningful predictions. However, climate scenarios are typically available at daily time step, severely limiting the applica ...

Orographic clouds typically form on the windward side of a topographic barrier when approaching air is cooled as it is lifted, and moisture condenses into cloud droplets. Under special conditions, however, clouds can appear on the leeward side of a mountai ...

In fall 2019, a new set of climate change scenarios has been released for Switzerland, the CH2018 dataset (www.climate-scenarios.ch). The data areprovided at daily resolution. We produced from the CH2018 dataset a new set of climate change scenarios tempor ...

Snow deposition and redistribution are major drivers of snow cover dynamics in mountainous terrain and contribute to the mass balance of alpine glaciers. The quantitative understanding of inhomogeneous snow distribution in mountains has recently benefited ...

Despite being the main sediment entrainment mechanism in aeolian transport, granular splash is still poorly understood. We provide a deeper insight into the dynamics of sand and snow ejection with a stochastic model derived from the energy and momentum con ...

Shadowgraphy was employed to study snow saltation in boundary-layer wind tunnel experiments with fresh, naturally deposited snow. The shadowgraphy method allowed for a temporally and spatially high-resolution investigation of snow particle characteristics ...

Predicting wind flow in highly complex terrain like the Alps is a challenge for all models. When physical processes need to be resolved in a spatially explicit manner, grids with high horizontal resolution of a few hundred meters are often required and dra ...

There are many sources providing atmospheric weather station data for the Antarctic continent. However, variable naming, timestamps and data types are highly variable between the different sources. The published python code intends to make processing of di ...

With large parts of the world moving toward renewable energies, there is an urgent need to organize this large-scale transition effectively. This paper presents a new methodology to guide the planning and siting of renewable electricity generation for coun ...

Wind energy is one of the potential options to fill the gap in renewable energy production in Switzerland during the winter season when the energy demand exceeds local production capacities. With likely further rising energy consumption in the future, the ...

A new wind tunnel was designed and built at SLF. The facility is ring-shaped to simulate an infinite fetch. This is important for experiments where the observed processes have a slow time scale (minutes to hours). The wind tunnel was developed to study the ...

This study presents a comprehensive sensitivity and uncertainty assessment of important input parameters on the Alpine3D modeled snow water equivalent (SWE) for two different alpine catchments. Horizontal resolution of the DEM grid, station coverage and se ...
