In many tokamaks ferromagnetic material, usually referred to as an iron-core, is present in order to improve the magnetic coupling between the solenoid and the plasma. The presence of the iron core in proximity to the plasma changes the magnetic topology w ...

Fast ions in fusion plasmas often leave characteristic signatures in the neutron emission from the plasma. In this paper, we show how neutron measurements can be used to study fast ions and give examples of physics results obtained on present day tokamaks. ...

A new DT campaign (DTE2) is planned at JET in 2020 to minimize the risks of ITER operations. In view of DT operations, a calibration of the JET neutron monitors at 14 MeV neutron energy has been performed using a well calibrated 14 MeV neutron generator (N ...

The shear strength of beams and one-way slabs has been acknowledged for more than one century as one of the most complex, yet fundamental, topics to be addressed in structural concrete design. The experimental data used to investigate the phenomenon has tr ...

Experiments at JET showed locally enhanced, asymmetric beryllium (Be) erosion at outer wall limiters when magnetically connected ICRH antennas were in operation. A first modeling effort using the 3D erosion and scrape-off layer impurity transport modeling ...

Tokamak operation with W PFCs is associated with specific challenges for impurity control, which may be particularly demanding in the transition from stationary H-mode to L-mode. To address W control issues in this phase, dedicated experiments have been pe ...

The minimum amount of shear reinforcement to be provided in reinforced concrete members has been a topic of debate and research for decades without reaching a consensus. Defining such values is however instrumental to build in an economic manner and to saf ...

Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC) is emerging as a promising alternative to ordinary Reinforced Concrete for the construction of durable, lightweight and more sustainable structures, with a large potential particularly in shells and thin members. Research ...

Simplified assumptions have traditionally been made on the rebar–to–concrete interaction in structural concrete to calculate the stress state in rebars. Such assumptions typically consider a uniform stress state in the reinforcement at a given cross sectio ...

EDGE2D-EIRENE (the 'code') simulations show that radial electric field, Er, in the near scrape-off layer (SOL) of tokamaks can have large variations leading to a strong local E x B shear greatly exceeding that in the core region. This was pointed out in si ...

Shear in concrete members without transverse reinforcement can be carried by various potential sheartransfer actions, whose activation depends much on the actual cracking pattern and kinematics at failure. Failures can occur in a progressive manner (at the ...

Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC) is a cementitious composite material where a carbon or glass fabric is embedded as reinforcement. The use of TRC allows building thin and light structures, with reduced concrete covers and an enhanced durability due to the ...

Stress fields and strut-and-tie models are widely used for design and assessment of structural concrete members. Although they are often used in the same manner for both purposes, developing suitable stress fields and strut-and-tie models for the design of ...

Halo currents generated during unmitigated tokamak disruptions are known to develop rotating asymmetric features that are of great concern to ITER because they can dynamically amplify the mechanical stresses on the machine. This paper presents a multi-mach ...

The effect of fast ions on turbulent particle transport, driven by ion temperature gradient (ITG)/trapped electron mode turbulence, is studied. Two neutral beam injection (NBI) heated JET discharges in different regimes are analyzed at the radial position ...

The detrimental influence of high levels of sustained load on the compressive strength of concrete has been acknowledged and investigated since the 1950s. Despite the potential significance of this phenomenon in many situations, current design codes still ...

Redistribution of shear forces in reinforced concrete members without shear reinforcement is a key aspect for the assessment of the shear capacity of wide beams and slabs. Such redistributions are due to the nonlinear response of reinforced concrete (both ...

Many research efforts have so far been devoted to the topic of shear design of members without transverse reinforcement since the first development in structural concrete. This has allowed a number of significant advances in the understanding of the phenom ...

In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of type-I ELM time-series from the JET tokamak, the world's largest magnetic confinement plasma physics experiment, have been investigated. The dynamic analysis has been focused on the detection of nonlinear struc ...

To understand the fuel retention mechanism correlation of surface chemical states and hydrogen isotope retention behavior determined by XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) and TDS (Thermal desorption spectroscopy), respectively, for JET ITER-Like Wall s ...
