One's own voice is one of the most important and most frequently heard voices. Although it is the sound we associate most with ourselves, it is perceived as strange when played back in a recording. One of the main reasons is the lack of bone conduction tha ...

Hallucinations can occur in the healthy population, are clinically relevant and frequent symptoms in many neuropsychiatric conditions, and have been shown to mark disease progression in patients with neurodegenerative disorders where antipsychotic treatmen ...

The experience of singularity of the conscious self may break down in heautoscopy. In heautoscopy patients see a double or doppelganger of themselves. Moreover, the self may be experienced as reduplicated—existing at two or even more locations simultaneous ...

Most human navigation studies in MRI rely on virtual navigation. However, the necessary supine position in MRI makes it fundamentally different from daily ecological navigation. Nonetheless, until now, no study has assessed whether differences in physical ...

Somatoparaphrenia is a delusional misidentification and confabulation of body parts, usually arm or hand, opposite to a cerebral lesion, generally of the "minor" right hemisphere. There is some controversy concerning lesion site ( fronto-parietal; parieto- ...

The symptoms of patients with left personal neglect are characterized by inattention towards contralesional (left) body parts while at the same time explicitly ascertaining ownership for the neglected hemibody. It is currently unknown if personal neglect i ...

Despite technical advances in brain machine interfaces (BMI), for as-yet unknown reasons the ability to control a BMI remains limited to a subset of users. We investigate whether individual differences in BMI control based on motor imagery (MI) are related ...

The disownership of body parts, that most frequently occurs on the left side of the body, contralateral to right-hemispheric lesions, is an infrequent disorder, as usually assessed by interviews asking for dichotomic "yes/no" responses. This observational ...

A computer-implemented method for inducing an Out of Body Experience (OBE) in a user through an augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) system, the OBE including an exit state and a disembodiment state, the method comprising the steps of (a) changing the user vi ...

An add-on device for use in combination with a stereotactic apparatus is herein disclosed, the device including a stereotactic adapter, an optical support comprising lenses and a display support adapted to accommodate a virtual reality display. The stereot ...

Experimental manipulations of body ownership have indicated that multisensory integration is central to forming bodily self representation. Voluntary self touch is a unique multisensory situation involving corresponding motor, tactile and proprioceptive si ...

Dysfunction of sensorimotor predictive processing is thought to underlie abnormalities in self-monitoring producing passivity symptoms in psychosis. Experimentally induced sensorimotor conflict can produce a failure in bodily self-monitoring (presence hall ...

A method for inducing the feeling of a presence (FoP) in a subject by using a master-slave robotic system, the method including the steps of altering a visual perception of a surrounding environment of the subject, connecting the subject with a robotic mas ...

Out-of-body experiences (OBEs) are characterized by the subjective experience of being located outside the physical body. Little is known about the neurophysiology of spontaneous OBEs, which are often reported by healthy individuals as occurring during sta ...

Dedicated neural systems represent the space surrounding the body, termed Peripersonal space (PPS), by integrating visual or auditory stimuli occurring near the body with somatosensory information. As a behavioral proxy to PPS, we measured participants' re ...

Experiencing a body part as one's own, i.e., body ownership, depends on the integration of multisensory bodily signals (including visual, tactile, and proprioceptive information) with the visual top down signals from peripersonal space. Although it has bee ...

Manipulation of hand posture, such as crossing the hands, has been frequently used to study how the body and its immediately surrounding space are represented in the brain. Abundant data show that crossed arms posture impairs remapping of tactile stimuli f ...
