IntroductionDopaminergic scintigraphic imaging is a cornerstone to support the diagnosis in dementia with Lewy bodies. To clarify the current state of knowledge on this imaging modality and its impact on clinical diagnosis, we performed an updated systemat ...

Visual amplification of kinematic errors has successfully been applied to improve performance for upper limb movements. In this study, we investigated whether visual error augmentation can promote faster adaptation during a full-body balance task. Healthy ...

Knowing where objects are relative to us implies knowing where we are relative to the external world. Here, we investigated whether space perception can be influenced by an experimentally induced change in perceived self-location. To dissociate real and ap ...

Stimulation of a site on the brain's left hemisphere prompts the creepy feeling that somebody is close by. The strange sensation that somebody is nearby when no one is actually present has been described by psychiatric and neurological patients, as well as ...

Although there is increasing knowledge about how visual and tactile cues from the hands are integrated, little is known about how self-generated hand movements affect such multisensory integration. Visuo-tactile integration often occurs under highly dynami ...

Recent advances in virtual reality and robotic technologies have allowed researchers to explore the mechanisms underlying bodily aspects of self-consciousness which are largely attributed to the multisensory and sensorimotor processing of bodily signals (b ...

Grid cells in entorhinal cortex (EC) encode an individual’s location in space and rely on environmental cues and self-motion cues derived from the individual’s body. Body-derived signals are also primary signals for the sense of self and based on integrate ...

When presented with dynamic scenes, the brain integrates visual elements across space and time. Such non-retinotopic processing has been intensively studied from a psychophysical point of view, but little is known about the underlying neural processes. Her ...

Many studies focused on the cortical representations of fingers, while the palm is relatively neglected despite its importance for hand function. Here, we investigated palm representation (PR) and its relationship with finger representations (FRs) in prima ...

Our sense of agency, the subjective experience of controlling our actions, is a crucial component of self-awareness and motor control. It is thought to originate from the comparison between intentions and actions across broad cortical networks. However, th ...

Cognetics joins the cognitive neuroscience of bodily awareness with robotics to study, control, and enhance perception, cognition, and consciousness. We highlight robot-controlled bodily perception, conscious states, and social interactions and sketch how ...

The processing of interoceptive signals in the insular cortex is thought to underlie self-awareness. However, the influence of interoception on visual awareness and the role of the insular cortex in this process remain unclear. Here, we show in a series of ...

Alloesthesia is a rare clinical condition that corresponds to a spatial disorder of stimulus localization, in which patients experience a given stimulus on the side opposite to the side of stimulation. Whereas it has been mostly described for unisensory st ...

Recent research in cognitive neuroscience using virtual reality, robotic technology and brain imaging has linked self-consciousness to the processing and integration of multisensory bodily signals. This work on bodily self-consciousness has implicated the ...

Embodiment, the sense of being localized within one's physical body, is a fundamental aspect of the self. Recent research shows that self and body processing as well as embodiment require distinct brain mechanisms. Here, we review recent clinical and neuro ...

When elements appear in quick succession they can integrate across space and time. Using high-density EEG techniques we show that such non-retinotopic feature integration is not time-locked to stimulus onset, but has a timing of its own. We presented a cen ...

In real-life situations, we are often required to recognize our own movements among movements originating from other people. In social situations, these movements are often correlated (for example, when dancing or walking with others) adding considerable d ...

In the present work, we report repeated out-of-body experiences (OBEs) in a patient with tetraplegia and severe somatosensory loss due to multiple sclerosis and predominant involvement of the cervical spinal cord. OBEs were experienced on a daily basis and ...

A crucial aspect of the human mind is the ability to project the self along the time line to past and future. It has been argued that such self-projection is essential to re-experience past experiences and predict future events. In-depth analysis of a nove ...

The representation of the body in the brain is continuously updated with regard to peripheral factors such as position or movement of body parts. In the present study, we investigated the effects of arm posture on the mental rotation of hands and feet. Six ...
