Information about a moving object is usually poor at each retinotopic location because photoreceptor activation is short, noisy, and affected by shadows, reflections of other objects, and so on. Integration across the motion trajectory may yield a much bet ...

Under normal viewing conditions, due to the motion of objects and to eye movements, the retinotopic representation of the environment constantly changes. Yet we perceive the world as stable, and we easily keep track of moving objects. Here, we investigated ...

Perceptual learning is learning to perceive. For example, a radiologist is able to easily identify anomalies in medical images only after extended training. Theoretical and psychophysical studies [1-12] suggest that such improvements of performance are acc ...

Background and Hypothesis For a long time, it was proposed that schizophrenia (SCZ) patients rely more on sensory input and less on prior information, potentially leading to reduced serial dependence-ie, a reduced influence of prior stimuli in perceptual t ...

As discovered by the Gestaltists, in particular by Duncker, we often perceive motion to be within a non-retinotopic reference frame. For example, the motion of a reflector on a bicycle appears to be circular, whereas, it traces out a cycloidal path with re ...

A large portion of the visual cortex is organized retinotopically, but perception is usually non-retinotopic. For example, a reflector on the spoke of a bicycle wheel appears to move on a circular or prolate cycloidal orbit as the bicycle moves forward, wh ...

In the Ebbinghaus illusion, observers overestimate the size of a target when it is surrounded by large flakers and compared with a control target surrounded by small flankers. We examined whether “objecthood” – the degree to which an object is a cohesive e ...

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that impairs individuals’ life, often chronically and from early adulthood on. There is a search for endophenotypes, i.e. stable markers of the genetic underpinnings of the disease. Visual backward masking (VBM) is ...

Consciousness is now a well-established field of empirical research. A large body of experimental results has been accumulated and is steadily growing. In parallel, many Theories of Consciousness (ToCs) have been proposed. These theories are diverse in nat ...

Author summary How do humans make prediction when the critical factor that influences the quality of the prediction is hidden? Here, we address this question by conducting a simple psychophysical experiment in which participants had to extrapolate a parabo ...

The first amazing effect with #TheDress is that a large number of people perceive it as white and gold even though the true colors of the dress are black and blue. Such apparent changes in color are common in many illusions. What makes #TheDress even more ...

Recent studies have shown that a variety of aftereffects occurs in a non-retinotopic frame of reference. These findings have been taken as strong evidence that remapping of visual information occurs in a hierarchic manner in the human cortex with an increa ...

BACKGROUND: An auditory perceptual learning paradigm was used to investigate whether implicit memories are formed during general anesthesia. METHODS: Eighty-seven patients who had an American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status of I-III and were s ...

The dopaminergic system has a unique gating function in the initiation and execution of movements. When the interhemispheric imbalance of dopamine inherent to the healthy brain is disrupted, as in Parkinson's disease (PD), compensatory mechanisms act to st ...

Performance in many everyday situations slows down when age increases. The causes of slowing down may be found on any stage of information processing. Here, we show that the combination of a vernier acuity task and the shine-through backward masking paradi ...

Simultaneous and temporal masking are two frequently used techniques in psychology and vision science. Although there are many studies and theories related to each masking technique, there are no systematic investigations of their mutual relationship, even ...

Objectives: The frontal hemispheric asymmetry and error-related components, as measured by EEG, are often considered to be biological correlates or “indicators of risk” for psychopathology. Here, we performed a meta-analysis to define specific patterns of ...

Perceptual learning improves perception through training. Perceptual learning improves with most stimulus types but fails when certain stimulus types are mixed during training (roving). This result is surprising because classical supervised and unsupervise ...

While it is well established that stress can modulate declarative learning, very few studies have investigated the influence of stress on non-declarative learning. Here, we studied the influence of post-learning stress, which effectively modulates declarat ...

Perceptual learning is an implicit form of learning which induces long-lasting perceptual enhancements. Perceptual learning shows intriguing characteristics. For example, a minimal number of trials per session is needed for learning and the interleaved pre ...
