Vernier alignment thresholds are strongly compromised when the vernier is embedded in an array of equal-length flanking lines. Here, we show that these contextual interactions can be diminished by giving the flanks the opposite contrast polarity, e.g., whi ...

Feature integration is one of the most fundamental problems in neuroscience. In a recent contribution, we showed that a trailing grating can diminish the masking effects one vernier exerts on another, preceding vernier. Here, we show that this temporal unm ...

In crowding, target discrimination is impaired by flanking elements. What happens if a target is neighbored by flankers A and in addition by further flankers B? According to pooling models, crowding is the consequence of averaging features of target and fl ...

Visual deficits are well documented in schizophrenia. For example, a Vernier is followed by a blank inter-stimulus interval (ISI) and then a grating mask. Observers indicate the direction of the Vernier offset (left vs right). Patients need ISIs that are 1 ...

We used backward masking paradigm to investigate the effects of aging on visual spatiotemporal processing. First, thirty-three older (M=65.3 years) and ten younger adults (M=24.3 years) had to indicate the offset direction of a vernier that was masked by a ...

Visual paradigms are versatile tools to investigate the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Contextual modulation refers to a class of paradigms where a target is flanked by neighboring elements, which either deteriorate or facilitate target perception. It i ...
