When a figure moves behind a stationary narrow slit, observers often report seeing the figure as an integrated whole, a phenomenon known as slit viewing or anorthoscopic perception. Interestingly, in slit viewing, the figure is perceived compressed along t ...

Responses to a target can be sped up or slowed down by a congruent or incongruent prime, respectively. Even though presentations are rapid, the prime and the target are thought to activate motor responses in strict sequence, with prime activation preceding ...

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe, validate, and compare the contrast sensitivity functions (CSFs) acquired with the novel quick CSF (qCSF) method from patients with early and intermediate age-related macular degeneration (eAMD and iAMD) a ...

Background and Hypothesis Individuals with schizophrenia have less priors than controls, meaning they rely less upon their prior experiences to interpret the current stimuli. These differences in priors are expected to show as higher alternation rates in b ...

What changes with age? Results in reinforcement learning (RL) are mixed. Some studies found deteriorated RL performance in older participants compared to younger controls whereas other studies did not. Daniel et al. (J Neurosci 40(5):1084–1096, 2020. 10.15 ...

Background: Computer assisted cognitive remediation (CACR) was demonstrated to be efficient in improving cognitive deficits in adults with psychosis. However, scarce studies explored the outcome of CACR in adolescents with psychosis or at high risk. Aims: ...

The last decade has experienced a vivid enthusiasm to unravel the mystery of consciousness believed to be one of the major puzzles of humankind. We share this enthusiasm. Still,we feel that current models are incomplete suffering from a problem that we cal ...

Dynamic stimuli are ubiquitous in natural viewing conditions implying that grouping operations need to operate, not only in space, but also jointly in space and time. Moreover, in natural viewing, attention plays an important role in controlling how resour ...

According to physicalism, everything is physical or metaphysically connected to the physical. If physicalism were true, it seems that we should - in principle - be able to reduce the descriptions and explanations of special sciences to physical ones, for e ...

Ageing affects many visual functions. Here, we investigated the effects of ageing on vernier acuity and backward masking using the shine-through paradigm. We divided healthy older adults (> 60 years) into two groups depending on whether vernier duration wa ...

In visual backward masking (VBM), a target is followed by a mask, which deteriorates performance on the target. Schizophrenia and first episodes patients show strong behavioral deficits, reflected in strongly reduced amplitudes of the EEG as compared to co ...

Perceptual learning is usually assumed to occur within sensory areas or when sensory evidence is mapped onto decisions. Subsequent procedural and motor processes, involved in most perceptual learning experiments, are thought to play no role in the learning ...

Spatiotemporal features are integrated along motion trajectories. For example, when a central line is followed by pairs of flanking lines, two motion streams diverging from the center are perceived. The central line is rendered invisible by the subsequent ...

Common factors are ubiquitous in cognition, audition, and somato-sensation. Surprisingly, there seems to be no common factor in vision, i.e., visual tasks correlate very weakly with each other. Here, we show that there are likely many very specific factors ...

The motion correspondence problem, one of the classical examples of perceptual organization, addresses the question of how elements are grouped across space and time. Here, we investigate motion correspondences using a new feature attribution technique. We ...

Crowding refers to the detrimental effect of nearby elements on target perception. Recently, Harrison and Bex (Curr Biol, 2015) modeled performance in a novel orientation crowding paradigm where observers reported the orientation of a Landolt C presented a ...

Motion processing is usually deemed to rely on retinotopic coordinates. Using a Ternus-Pikler display, we present an instance in which coherent motion of a dot can only be perceived when its position is integrated non-retinotopically. The stimulus consists ...

Awareness, focused attention, and task-relevance were thought to be necessary for perceptual learning (PL): a Feature of the Stimulus (FoS) on which participants perform a task is learned, while a task-irrelevant FoS is not learned. This view has been chal ...

Perceptual learning can occur for a feature irrelevant to the training task, when it is sub-threshold and outside of the focus of attention (task-irrelevant perceptual learning, TIPL); however, TIPL does not occur when the task-irrelevant feature is supra- ...

Tests used in the empirical sciences are often (implicitly) assumed to be representative of a given research question in the sense that similar tests should lead to similar results. Here, we show that this assumption is not always valid. We illustrate our ...
