The world's population is aging at an increasing rate. Even in the absence of neurodegenerative disorders, healthy aging affects perception and cognition. In the context of cognition, common factors are well established. Much less is known about common fac ...

When presented with dynamic scenes, the brain integrates visual elements across space and time. Such non-retinotopic processing has been intensively studied from a psychophysical point of view, but little is known about the underlying neural processes. Her ...

To investigate the mechanisms of perceptual learning, we recently introduced a paradigm in which incorrect, reverse feedback followed after some but not all vernier presentations. This feedback paradigm exerted a strong effect on performance that seemed to ...

The first psychotic episode is an important period for prevention of cognitive and social deterioration in schizophrenia. Cognitive deficits are of particular interest since they are evident even before a proper diagnosis can be made. Interestingly, there ...

Schizophrenia research has focused on single mechanisms mainly. Classically, a paradigm is chosen, such as a cognitive or perceptual test. The outcome is usually that schizophrenia patients perform worse than controls. Substantial research is then spent to ...

Visual backward masking is strongly deteriorated in patients with schizophrenia. Masking deficits are associated with strongly reduced amplitudes of the global field power in the EEG. Healthy participants who scored high in cognitive disorganization (a sch ...

Perceptual learning is the process by which experience alters how incoming sensory information is processed by the brain to give rise to behavior-it is critical for how humans educate children, train experts, treat diseases, and promote health and well-bei ...

Attentional capture is often thought to be automatic and not modulable. For example, visual search experiments showed that salient distractor singletons strongly capture attention even when they had to be ignored by the observers. Recently, however, it was ...

In binocular rivalry, only one image is perceived consciously when different, incompatible images are presented to the left and right eye, respectively. The other image is suppressed. Binocular suppression is generally assumed to occur within retinotopic c ...

In crowding, perception of a target deteriorates when neighboring flankers are presented. Flankers close to the fovea deteriorate performance less strongly than flankers presented peripherally, the well-known crowding asymmetries. For example, we presented ...

Is consciousness a continuous stream, or do percepts occur only at certain moments of time? This age-old question is still under debate. Both positions face difficult problems, which we proposed to overcome with a 2-stage model, where unconscious processin ...

When elements appear in quick succession they can integrate across space and time. Using high-density EEG techniques we show that such non-retinotopic feature integration is not time-locked to stimulus onset, but has a timing of its own. We presented a cen ...

In crowding, perception of a target deteriorates in the presence of nearby elements. As the entire stimulus configuration across large parts of the visual field influences crowding and not just nearby elements, low-level explanations, such as local pooling ...

In crowding, target perception deteriorates when flanking elements are added. Crowding is traditionally characterized by target-flanker interactions which are (1) deleterious, (2) spatially confined within Bouma’s window, and (3) feature specific. Here, we ...

Human perception of a stimulus varies depending on the context in which the stimulus is presented. Such contextual modulation has often been explained by two basic neural mechanisms: lateral inhibition and spatial pooling. In the present study, we presente ...

The perception of a stimulus can strongly be modified by its spatial context. For example, when a vernier stimulus is flanked by two lines, performance deteriorates compared to a vernier without flanks. This is usually explained by local interactions, such ...

Geometry is closely linked to visual perception; yet, very little is known about the geometry of visual processing beyond early retinotopic organization. We present a variety of perceptual phenomena showing that a retinotopic representation is neither suff ...

At the heart of feature integration theory is a master map which operates on dimension-based feature maps. It is assumed that these feature maps are organized retinotopically. If in conjunction search, for example, a horizontal green line has to be searche ...

Traditional models posit that visual processing is local and feedforward. In this vein, crowding is explained to be the result of pooling of target and flanker features in early visual areas. Specifically, it has been suggested that when the target and fla ...

Perceptual learning is usually thought to be exclusively driven by the stimuli presented during training (and the underlying synaptic learning rules). In some way, we are slaves of our visual experiences. However, learning can occur even when no stimuli ar ...
