In this article, we define and address the problem of finding the visual focus of attention for a varying number of wandering people (VFOA-W) -- determining where a person is looking when their movement is unconstrained. VFOA-W estimation is a new and impo ...

This paper presents a probabilistic algorithm for segmenting and recognizing text embedded in video sequences based on adaptive thresholding using a Bayes filtering method. The algorithm approximates the posterior distribution of segmentation thresholds of ...

Distant microphones permit to process spontaneous multi-party speech with very little constraints on speakers, as opposed to close-talking microphones. Minimizing the constraints on speakers permits a large diversity of applications, including meeting summ ...

Current dialogue systems typically lack a variation of audio-visual feedback tokens. Either they do not encompass feedback tokens at all, or only support a limited set of stereotypical functions. However, this does not mirror the subtleties of spontaneous ...

This paper introduces a novel approach for extracting speaker embeddings from audio mixtures of multiple overlapping voices. This approach is based on a multi-task neural network. The network first extracts a latent feature for each direction. This feature ...

This paper presents an upper-body detection algorithm that extends classical shape-based detectors through the use of additional semantic colour segmentation cues. More precisely, candidate upper-body image patches produced by a base detector are soft-segm ...

Accurate and robust 3D head pose estimation is important for face related analysis. Though high accuracy has been achieved by previous works based on 3D morphable model (3DMM), their performance drops with extreme head poses because such models usually onl ...

This paper addresses the recognition of people’s visual focus of attention (VFOA), the discrete version of gaze indicating who is looking at whom or what. In absence of high def- inition images, we rely on people’s head pose to recognize the VFOA. To the c ...

The rapid growth of multimedia databases and the human interest in their peers make indices representing the location and identity of people in audio-visual documents essential for searching archives. Person discovery in the absence of prior identity knowl ...

We present a novel approach for contextual classification of image patches in complex visual scenes, based on the use of histograms of quantized features and probabilistic aspect models. Our approach uses context in two ways: (1) by using the fact that spe ...

While shared autonomy offers significant potential for assistive robotics, key questions remain about how to effectively map 2D control inputs to 6D robot motions. An intuitive framework should allow users to input commands effortlessly, with the robot res ...

We present a Conditional Random Field (CRF) approach to tracking-by-detection in which we model pairwise factors linking pairs of detections and their hidden labels, as well as higher order potentials defined in terms of label costs. Our method considers l ...

Maya hieroglyphic analysis requires epigraphers to spend a significant amount of time browsing existing catalogs to identify individual glyphs. Automatic Maya glyph analysis provides an efficient way to assist scholars’ daily work. We introduce the Histogr ...

We describe the design of a system consisting of several state-of-the-art real-time audio and video processing components enabling multimodal stream manipulation (e.g., automatic online editing for multiparty videoconferencing applications) in open, uncons ...

First impressions play a critical role in the hospitality industry and have been shown to be closely linked to the behavior of the person being judged. In this work, we implemented a behavioral training framework for hospitality students with the goal of i ...
