Expertise Ceramics synthesis and Processing; Nanomaterial synthesis; Nanomaterial characterization; Thermodynamic - Kinetic modeling; Powder synthesis scale-up. MER Dr. Andrea Testino received his master’s degree in Industrial Chemistry and PhD in Material Science from the University of Genoa (Italy). He did post-doctoral studies at EPFL (CH), University College London (UK), and University of Milan (I) working on nanoparticles synthesis and characterization. In 2007 he joined the company TDK-EPC (A) as Senior Development Engineer working in the Elecroceramic Components Division on Innovative Themes. In 2011 he joined the Paul Scherrer Institut, establishing the Advanced Nanopowders Synthesis team. The actual activity is devoted to the continuous synthesis of nanoparticles for catalytic, optical, magnetic, and biomedical applications. A parallel research activity is focused on the study of the nucleation and growth mechanisms of inorganic materials combining experimental data with mathematical models. In addition, a team for synthesis, processing, and characterization of ceramic materials has been established under his leadership. All these activities are developed in the Synthesis and Processing Platform, under his leadership, with focus on basic science as well as applied industrial projects. Within the Laboratory for Energy Technologies and Innovation, he is making contributions to develop new clean technologies, hereby addressing the performance of the materials involved throughout their life cycle and considering sustainability since the production of materials, aiming to increase resources efficiency and reducing toxicity for human beings as well as for the environment. He is MER, teaching mainly on ceramis and colloids, and PhD thesis director at EPFL. His scientific activity is summarized in about 90 peer-reviewed scientific publications, more than 4800 citations, and 15 patents, some of them worldwide granted. Students will learn concepts on advanced technologically-relevant ceramic materials for a wide range of applications from MedTech, energy conversion & storage, with insights on sustainability & material lifecycle. Ceramic and colloidal processing MSE-326 The course covers the production of ceramics and colloids from the basic scientific concepts and theories needed to understand the forming processes to the mechanisms and methods of sintering (firing) ceramics. Including the scientific principles behind the formation of colloidal dispersions. Multidisciplinary NPs characterization MSE-676 Four experienced scientists will guide students into the world of NPs characterization with different approaches, from laboratory characterization to X-ray/neutron scattering and electron microscopy. The main knowledge acquired will concern the overview of possible complementary technique. Powder Diffraction School - Modern Syncrotron Methods MSE-663 Modern synchrotron-radiation methods not only provide data of exceptional quality, but have allowed previously inaccessible experiments to be performed. The school will give a broad overview of all possibilities using synchrotron radiation, including hands-on practicals.
