The large variability of the drop size distribution (DSD) in space and time must be taken into account to improve remote sensing of precipitation. The ability to simulate a large number of 2D fields of DSD sharing the same statistical properties provides a ...

The ability to predict the runoff response of an urban catchment to rainfall is crucial for managing drainage systems effectively and controlling discharges from urban areas. In this paper we assess the potential of commercial microwave links (MWL) to capt ...

Microwave links are widely used for wireless data exchange, particularly between base stations of mobile phone networks. Because of the range of frequencies used for data transmission, the link signal is attenuated when rainfall occurs along the link path. ...

A method for the stochastic simulation of (rain)drop size distributions (DSDs) in space and time using geostatistics is presented. At each pixel, the raindrop size distribution is described by a Gamma distribution with two or three stochastic parameters. T ...

Rainfall intermittency is analyzed and quantified at small spatial and temporal scales using 2 years of radar and disdrometer data collected in Switzerland. Analytical models are fitted and used to describe the intermittency for spatial scales between 0 an ...

Precipitation is an important component of the Earth' water cycle and needs to be carefully monitored. Its large variability over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales must be taken into account. For example, hydrological models require accurate rain ...

A particular aspect of the nonstationary nature of intermittent rainfall is investigated. It manifests itself in the fact that the average rain rate varies with the distance to the surrounding dry areas. The authors call this fundamental link between the r ...

Data from a new experimental setup deployed in Dübendorf (Switzerland) are used to quantify and model the magnitude and dynamics of the wet-antenna attenuation (WAA) affecting a 1.85-km commercial microwave link at 38 GHz. The results show that the WAA exh ...

Rapid mass movements (RMM) pose a substantial risk to people and infrastructure. Reliable and cost-efficient measures have to be taken to reduce this risk. One of these measures includes establishing and advancing the State of Practice in the application o ...

Like precipitation, the raindrop size distribution (DSD) is strongly variable in space and time. Understanding this variability is important for quantifying and minimizing some of the uncertainties in radar measurements and their interpretation in terms of ...

A stochastic rainfall simulator based on the concept of “dry drift” is proposed. It is characterized by a new and nonstationary representation of rainfall in which the average rain rate (in log-space) depends on the distance to the closest surrounding dry ...
