Bedload transport rate fluctuations have been observed over time in steep rivers and flumes with wide grain size distributions even under constant sediment feeding and water discharge. The observed bedload transport rate pulses are periodic and a consequen ...

Dams interrupt the longitudinal connectivity of a river as they store water and trap sediment. When transport capacity downstream of dams exceeds sediment supply, water becomes hungry and channel incision, bed armouring and reduction of morphological diver ...

The flow field of multiple-cylinder configurations exhibits complex interactions between shear layers, vortexes and wakes. For high stem-Reynolds numbers, the flow is turbulent and, low and intermediate areal number-densities of cylinders, and turbulence i ...

During floods, the bedload transport of steep headwaters can exceed the hydraulic transport capacity of milder downstream reaches where settlements are often situated. Therefore, sediment retention barriers are typically installed upstream of such sensible ...

The understanding of the physical processes related to flows on compound meandering channels is a challenge given their highly 3D and complex characteristics. Three-dimensional ADV measurements were made in three cross-sections on a 1:20 physical Froude mo ...

This article is aimed at quantifying and discussing the relative magnitude of key terms of the equation of conservation of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) in the inter-stem space of a flow within arrays of vertical cylinders simulating plant stems of emerge ...

Large-scale flow structures (LSFS) in the streamwise direction are important features of gravel-bed river flows, because they may contribute to sediment transport and gas exchange. In the present study, these structures are detected using Huang's empirical ...

Buoyancy driven flows such as gravity currents, present in nature and human made applications, are conveyors of particles or dissolved substances for long distances with clear implications for the environment. This transport depends on the triggering condi ...

In water supply systems there is potential for hydropower production at several scales, from small hydro to micro. The energy recovery within the urban water supply networks is a type of micro-hydro that may be useful for the control of excessive pressures ...

Recently, Jafarnejad, Franca, Pfister, and Schleiss [2017. Time-based failure analysis of compressed riverbank riprap. Journal of Hydraulic Research, 55(2), 224–235. doi: 10.1080/00221686.2016.1212940] presented an experimental study on the stability of co ...

Methods to design riprap-lined channels usually refer to dumped material. Large blocks placed individually by machinery are used when more stability is required. They offer additional resistance against flow erosion since space between blocks is minimized ...

It is known that bedload fluctuates over time in steep rivers with wide grain size distributions, even under conditions of constant sediment feed and water discharge. Bedload fluctuations, which are a consequence of grain sorting, are periodic and are rela ...

The spatial distribution of emergent vegetation in rivers is frequently nonuniform. Here, spatial nonuniformity is simulated in the laboratory by varying longitudinally the stem areal number density (m). Time- and space-averaged flow variables, correspondi ...

Dams trap sediments in the upstream reservoir, thus the continuity in sediment transport along the river is interrupted. Several negative aspects related to the lack of sediment supply were observed downstream many dams and the artificial replenishment of ...

Systematic experimental investigations have been performed under uniform flow conditions in a channel whose banks are equipped with large scale rectangular roughness elements. The practical motivation of this project is to see how restoration of banks, suc ...

The interest in micro-hydropower in existing infrastructure is increasing since this is a technology with low environmental impacts and potential for energy recovery in different types of installation. The technologies available for these schemes are still ...

Most sediment transport equations overestimate the bedload transport rate by several times when applied to mountain rivers. This is due to the fact that the presence of large relatively immobile boulders, which disrupt the flow, is generally not taken into ...
